Princeton Falls To No. 16 Maryland, 77-57, In NCAA First Round

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Princeton Tigers were taken down by the No. 16 Maryland Terrapins, 77-57, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Reynolds Coliseum on Friday afternoon.
Abby Meyers led the squad with 13 points while Bella Alarie dropped in 12 points in the loss. The sophomore contributed six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Leslie Robinson snagged nine points, six rebounds and five assists.

After the Tigers registered the first basket of the game, the Terrapins ripped off nine straight, taking a 9-2 lead at the 5:55 mark. A three-pointer from Gabrielle Rush got the Tigers within four, 15-11, with 1:21 left, but Maryland took a six-point advantage into the second frame (17-11).

Another trey from Rush got the contest within one possession (17-14) as the second quarter got underway, but Maryland ran off with 10 of the next 13 to improve its advantage to 10 (27-17) as the clock ticked under three minutes. Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad completed the half with nine of the final 13 points, highlighted by six points from Alarie, to close the gap to five (31-26).
Maryland opened up the second half with eight consecutive points, extending its advantage to 13 just three minutes in. Back-to-back jumpers from Meyers and Sydney Jordan got the game back to single-digits, but the Terrapins used a 12-6 sprint to take a 16-point lead into the final 10 minutes of game action, 52-36. Princeton did not get any closer in the fourth frame.
Kaila Charles led Maryland with 20 points while Eleanna Christinaki (16) and Kristen Confroy (14) also scored in double figures for the Terrapins. The No. 16 team in the country went 18-of-32 (56.2 percent) in the second half. The Terrapins will take on the winner of No. 22 NC State and Elon on Sunday.

With the loss, the careers of Kenya Holland, Leslie Robinson and Tia Weledji came to an end. The group went 94-27 all time and an impressive 47-9 in the Ivy League. The trio has earned two conference crowns and went to the postseason every season.
