Tigers' Spring Break Trip to Florida to Begin Saturday
March 15, 2018 | Softball
It's been Arizona, D.C. and now Florida for the Princeton softball team which will embark on its spring trip with play beginning Saturday.
In a South Florida-hosted event in Clearwater, Fla., the Tigers will play Florida A&M at 12 p.m. Saturday, South Florida at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Elon at 9 a.m. Sunday and Florida Gulf Coast at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
The Tigers will enter the trip looking for their first win of the season. Princeton is hitting .276 as a team, led by sophomore Megan Donahey at .364 with a team-best 12 hits. Junior Keeley Walsh, second on the team at .355, popped the first home run of the season for the Tigers last weekend. In the circle, rookie Allie Reynolds and senior Ashley LaGuardia have thrown all but eight of the team's 59 innings.Â
Florida A&M stands 6-16 entering the weekend, hitting .218 as a team and carrying a 4.01 team ERA. FAMU has won four of the seven meetings between the teams with the last meeting coming in 2015.Â
USF is 17-12 entering the weekend, and the Bulls have already faced an Ivy opponent with an 8-0, five-inning win over Penn on March 3. USF is hitting .304 as a team with an ERA of 3.29. The Bulls have won three of the five all-time meetings with Princeton, though the teams haven't met since 2007.
Elon, too, also has a win over an Ivy opponent this season, defeating Harvard 5-1 on March 2. The Phoenix stand 13-9 entering the weekend, hitting .260 as a team and with a solid 2.57 ERA. Elon has won two of the three meetings, though Princeton and Elon haven't met since 2009.
FGCUÂ stands 20-4 and with a seven-game winning streak entering the weekend. The Eagles are hitting .254 as a team with a strong 1.31 ERA. Princeton and FGCUÂ have never met.Â
After the weekend, the Tigers will continue their Florida trip with a Tuesday doubleheader at Stetson and a Wednesday twinbill at Central Florida. Princeton will then return home to begin Ivy League play March 24 against Brown.
