Reynolds' No-Hitter Highlights Tigers' First Day in Florida
March 17, 2018 | Softball
All at once, rookie Allie Reynolds achieved the Princeton softball team's first win of the season, the first win of her career, and the first no-hitter of her career as the Tigers beat Florida A&M 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Clearwater, Fla.
Princeton battled event host South Florida to an 8-5 defeat in game two. The Tigers will have two more games at the event Sunday, first against Elon at 9 a.m. and then against Florida Gulf Coast at 11:15 a.m.
The no-hitter is Princeton's first since Erica Nori '17 threw one against North Dakota on March 18, 2017, and it's just the sixth by a freshman in program history. Kristen Schaus '08, in a five-inning effort against Elon in 2005, was the last Tiger rookie to pull the feat, and Dawn Roberts '91, against Villanova in 1988, was the only other to do so in a seven-inning game.
Against FAMU, Princeton scored its lone run in the fifth inning. Kylee Pierce began the frame by reaching on a two-base error and then scored later in the inning when she stole third and came home on a throwing error on the play. FAMU had just three base-runners with none getting past first base. Kyaira Brown was hit by a pitch after Reynolds retired the first seven FAMU batters, and errors allowed runners to reach in the fourth and the seventh.
Against USF, Princeton saw the Bulls put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first, using three walks and a pair of base hits. The Tigers got one of those back when Mikayla Blaska picked up a Mackenzie Meyer two-out single with a double two batters later, but USF kept the 3-1 lead into the fourth.
Princeton tied it up when an error off a ball hit by Allison Harvey scored Alex Viscusi and Blaska after two hits and a walk earlier in the inning as Princeton tied it at 3-3. USF, though, took the lead back for good with a five-run fifth on a Samantha Worrell solo shot and a Lindsey Devitt grand slam after three walks.Â
Princeton pulled to within 8-4 in the sixth when Harvey had a two-out single to pick up a Blaska walk, and the Tigers added their final run in the seventh when Blaska reached on an error that scored Hannah Lutz, who ran for Keeley Walsh on a leadoff walk.
USF used five pitchers in the win with second pitcher Hannah Parker getting the win in a third of an inning of work while Cheyenne Eggens picked up the save while working the seventh. Ashley LaGuardia took the loss for the Tigers, splitting the duties with Caroline Taber.
