PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (3-10) earned their first victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (13-9) since 2011 with a 6-5 decision at Bainton Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Conor Nolan hit his second career home run while Joseph Flynn and David Harding added two hits. Princeton finished with 10 walks and nine hits in the victory. Senior Kevin Thomsen earned his first career win and Eli Kimbell nabbed his second save of the season.
Rutgers put together the first scoring threat in the second inning. With one out, a walk and single put runners on first and second. The two would later advance to scoring position with two out, but Jack Anderson got a ground out to end the frame.
Princeton's first scoring opportunity came in the third. With one out, Chris Davis walked and moved to second on a base hit from Asher Lee-Tyson. After a pop up, Flynn ripped a base hit to left field, loading the bases, but a groundout finished off the Tigers. The home squad got on the board in the bottom portion of the third. Mike Nyisztor walked and stole second. After scooting over to third, he touched home a single from Nick Matera.
Princeton ran off a four-spot in the fifth frame. Harding led off with a single and moved to second on a missed catch at the base by the shortstop. Two batters later, a walk put Tigers at every base with one out. A groundout from Flynn tied the contest at 1-all before Nolan lofted a long drive that got out of the ballpark, giving Princeton a three-run advantage, 4-1.
Rutgers wasted little time, tying the contest in its next at-bat. Matera ripped a two-run double to left center before eventually scoring on a groundout. Princeton retook the lead on a bases-loaded walk from Flynn in the sixth inning. A fielder's choice, one hitter later, gave the Tigers a 6-4 advantage.
Jawuwan Harris' double to left field scored Nyisztor in the sixth, getting Rutgers within one, 6-5. The Big Ten foe was looking to tie the contest in the next stanza as the first three runners got on via two singles and a fielders' choice. Kimbell came in for Thomsen, getting two strikeouts and a groundout to get out of the jam. The sophomore pitcher retired nine straight hitters as Princeton earned its third victory of the season.
Princeton will look to get Ivy League play started at Clarke Field this weekend against the Cornell Big Red. A doubleheader will start Saturday (Mar. 31) at 11:30 a.m. The series finale takes place Sunday (Apr. 1) at 1 p.m. Each game will be streamed on the Ivy League Network.
