No. 11 Syracuse Takes a Nail-biter at No. 19 Princeton, 17-16
March 29, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
In a complete nailbiter of a game that came down to the final possession, No. 11 Syracuse came out on top 17-16 at No. 19 Princeton on Thursday at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Orange led by as many as five goals in the first period before the Tigers started the second half dominating with four straight goals to make it a 9-9 tie. Three of those four goals came from sophomore Tess D'Orsi as she nearly single handily fought to bring it to a tie in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Syracuse added back to back goals to regain a 11-9 edge but Princeton responded with three straight as senior Camille Sullivan buried a Kyla Sears pass, Ellie McNulty popped in an unassisted goal and D'Orsi converted on a free-position that gave Princeton its first lead of the game 12-11 at 14:29.
Syracuse changed up its draw control hand of Julie Cross, switching her from lefty to righty and she started to pick off the draws helping the Orange take a 4-1 run over the next six minutes. Riley Donahue scored twice before Kathryn Hallett buried her 14th goal of the season for the Tigers. Donahue set up Cara Quimby before Vanessa Costantino put away a Bella Recchion pass as Syracuse regained a 15-13 lead with 8:34 on the clock.
D'Orsi added her career high fifth goal of the game at 7:35 on a great cutting feed from Sears to make it a one-goal game once again.
Sam Swart put the Orange back up by two converting on a man-up possession at 5:40 and Molly Carter made it a 17-14 game at 4:12.
Junior Elizabeth George went into the center circle to challenge Cross and won the next two draws and giving Princeton the possession to have senior Colby Chanenchuk come around from behind the cage to bury her second of the season at 3:44. Freshman Marge Donovan won the next draw and Sears hit her 26th tally of the season to bring it within one, 17-16 with 2:55 to play.
Ella Simkins won the final draw but the craftiness of defender Alex Argo forced a turnover and Princeton took it the other way. The Tigers cleared but a pass 15 seconds left in front of the crease skirted out of bounds giving the Orange the final possession.
Princeton utilized all three goalkeepers with sophomore Winnie Brandfield-Harvey earning the start and making two saves on seven shots. Senior Mary Kate McDonough made one save in just under 10 minutes before freshman Sam Fish closed out the final 32:19. She made four stops on 12 saves.
Syracuse too also switched things up. Asa Goldstock who started the game on fire with two saves on the first two shots and also picked off two passes, was pulled in the second for a rest. Hannah Van Middelem went in on relief and made two saves on five shots in 6:47 before Goldstock trotted back out the cage.
