Princeton Looks To Build On Strong Opener, Hosts Columbia/Notre Dame Saturday On ILN
March 29, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
There was a definite excitement that came out of Princeton's 2018 season opener, an impressive 1V win over two Top-8 finishers at the most recent NCAA Championships. But that excitement was tempered by the knowledge that there is a long road ahead for the Tigers, who can still build plenty on that strong foundation.
Princeton, which debuted at #4 in the first CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, will try to keep building Saturday morning when it hosts both Notre Dame and Columbia on the Ivy League Network. The regatta will begin at 9 am with the varsity fours, and will continue with races every 20 minutes. The 1V8 race is set for a 9:20 start.
The Tigers were in control of their 1V race over Michigan and Brown pretty quickly, and they grabbed an open water lead by the 1500-meter mark. Michigan made a late push to get past Brown, but it wasn't able to make up similar ground against a Princeton that didn't have a single senior rower (senior Kate Elfers was the 1V coxswain).
On the flip side, the Princeton 2V included five senior rowers — including co-captains Riley MacAulay and Rachel Reed — and that boat split its opener. While Brown grabbed the win by three seconds, the Tigers did fight off a Michigan 2V that won bronze at the NCAA Championships last year.
The Tiger varsity four started three underclassman rowers, as well as a sophomore coxswain, and that boat got good early experience in a third-place finish in its race. The V4B has three freshmen make their collegiate debuts, and they impressed by defeating Brown by more than six seconds.
This will be one of five straight home weekends to open the 2018 season, a stretch that includes the April 7 Ivy League Invitational, where seven of the eight Ivy League programs (Brown will not in attendance) will meet at Lake Carnegie to compete in both morning and afternoon competitions. Princeton will compete for the Class of 1975 Cup in the morning, and then for the Class of 1984 Plaque in the afternoon.
A complete rundown of the Ivy League Invitational will be posted next weekend.
