Heavyweights Go 5-For-5 On The Severn River, Return Home With The Navy-Princeton Cup
March 31, 2018 | Heavyweight Rowing
Senior captain Augustin Wambersie knew racing Navy on the Severn River would provide exactly the type of test his team needed before it moved into Ivy League competition next weekend. His third-ranked 1V even got the toughest conditions of the morning, but his boat handled all obstacles impressively.
Princeton retained the Navy-Princeton Cup by exactly 10 seconds Saturday morning in Annapolis, as the Tiger 1V moved to 3-0 on the season with a win in 5:40.7. As happy as Wambersie was with his own win, he was quick to give credit to a younger, less experienced crew on his team.
"Our race was a good step forward, improving over last week which is our main goal in the early season," Wambersie said afterwards. "We held our ground against Navy's early attacks but the champions of the day were definitely the 5V though, making us go 5/5 for the first time in a long run against a very deep team. A key player in that race was Alex Levine '19, really setting it up for his boat from bow."
That victory did clinch a perfect morning for the Tigers against an always-deep Midshipmen crew. Princeton also claimed the Little Man Trophy, which goes to the cumulative points winner in the 1V/2V/3V races between both the heavyweights and lightweights (who won at Navy last weekend).
Both the Princeton 2V and 3V looked strong again with open water wins. The Princeton 2V won in 5:45.6, also a 10-second margin over Navy, while the 3V won by nearly 15 seconds in a time of 5:44.1.
The 4V and 5V had much tighter margins, but both answered the call. The 4V had the race of the morning, as it held off Navy by 2.1 seconds for the win. The 5V took on three Navy boats and topped the Midshipmen 5V by four seconds to secure the 5-0 morning.
"I was pleased with the performance of our entire squad today," head coach Greg Hughes said. "Navy always has a deep program. Boats are kind of their thing. It is never easy to race Navy on the Severn and post wins at all levels. It's a positive early step for our team and we were excited about the day but we all know there's more work to do."
That work will take Princeton into the 2018 Ivy League season, which should be loaded with both Sprints and IRA contenders this spring. There are currently six Ivy League teams ranked inside the USRowing Top 10, and the other two (Penn and Columbia) are ranked in the Top 16. That duo will make their way to Lake Carnegie next weekend to face Princeton for the Childs Cup, the oldest trophy in collegiate racing.
"With two races under our belt we are pumped to let loose against some strong Ivy League competitors in the following weeks," Wambersie said. "It will give us a chance to really test our speed against the top end of the field."
The Childs Cup regatta is set to begin at 8:15 am, and it will lead off a full morning of racing on Lake Carnegie. All four teams will compete at home next weekend, and the full event will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
