Princeton Rallies From Six Down, But UNCW Scores 9-8 Victory
March 04, 2018 | Baseball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Down to their final strike, the Princeton Tigers came all the way back from a six-run deficit, but a walk-off home run gave the UNCW Seahawks a 9-8 victory at Brooks Field on Sunday afternoon.
Princeton's first scoring threat was in the second inning as Conor Nolan led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third base on a wild pitch with one out, but was left stranded. UNCW's Noah Bridges' RBI single put the home team in front, 1-0, in the next half frame.
Zach Canada's two-run knock gave UNCW a three-run lead in the home portion of the fourth inning. The Tigers broke through in the sixth as Jesper Horsted touched the plate on a wild pitch.
The Seahawks posted a four-run at-bat in the sixth inning. Greg Jones brought home a run on a single. After a wild pitch scored another run, Canada singled in Jones before a fielding error gave UNC its seventh run of the game.
The Tigers didn't go away with a four-spot in the seventh. Sy Snedeker and Taylor Beckett led off the stanza with singles before Jake Boone's RBI hit scored Snedeker while Beckett scooted home on a fielding error. Two batters later, Asher Lee-Tyson knocked one through the right side that brought in Boone. A UNCW fielding error got the Tigers within two, 7-5.
In the eighth, Chris Davis ripped a double to right field with two strikes and two outs that scored Beckett, cutting the Princeton deficit to one, 7-6. Canada provided an insurance tally with a RBI two-base hit in the bottom portion of the eighth.
Princeton put together one more rally in the top of the ninth. Horsted led off with a single, but was forced out on a fielder's choice. The next hitter's, Joseph Flynn, hit put runners on first and second. After a strikeout, Snedeker worked the count full before tying the game on a clutch two-out two-run double to right field.
UNCW's Levi Gesell hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Seahawks the four-game series sweep. Davis and Snedeker had two hits each for Princeton. Canada and Jones had a game-high three hits each for UNCW.
Princeton heads back on the road next week with a trip to South Carolina (Mar. 9-11). Each game will be streamed on ESPN3. First pitch for Friday's game will be at 7 p.m.
