Princeton Falls To South Carolina, 9-2
March 09, 2018 | Baseball
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite three hits from Joseph Flynn, the Princeton Tigers lost game one of a three-game set with the South Carolina Gamecocks, 9-2, at Founders Park on Friday evening.
Flynn led the unit with his three hits. Chris Davis reached base twice at the top of the order while Eli Kimbell and Tanner Kliewer combined for four strikeouts in the loss.
Davis led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a hit from Asher Lee-Tyson. Three batters later, Flynn came through with a two-out RBI single that just got over the second baseman's head. South Carolina tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a throwing error.
In the third, Noah Campbell led off with a single for South Carolina and quickly came around to score on a triple from TJ Hopkins. A few hitters later, Jonah Bride's RBI hit gave the Gamecocks their third run. The home squad tacked on additional runs on a pass ball and a balk in the fifth.
Princeton had a runner in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but couldn't push across a run. In the eighth, the Tigers broke through with a tally. With one out, Conor Nolan walked and moved to second on an infield hit from Flynn. Ramzi Haddad followed with a knock to left field, loading the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Brian Kregel grounded out to first, allowing Nolan to score and get the Tigers within three, 5-2. A strikeout ended the threat.
A two-run double from Jacob Olson and two-run home run from Matt Williams in the bottom of the eighth completed the scoring. Three different players had multi-hits in the game for South Carolina.
The two teams get at it tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Ryan Smith and James Proctor will be on the mound for Princeton. Fans can watch the game on the WatchESPN app.
