Tigers to Head to D.C. for Season's Second Weekend

Fairleigh Dickinson and host George Washington are on the docket on the second weekend of the season for the Princeton softball team.
The Tigers will face George Washington three times, once each day Friday through Sunday, and FDU Friday and Saturday. Friday will begin against FDU at 10 a.m. followed by GW at 12:15 p.m. Saturday has the Tigers and Knights meeting again at 10 a.m. and GW at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the Tigers will close against GW at noon. Games will be video streamed on the Atlantic 10 network, which is subscription-based.
Princeton opened its season last weekend with five games hosted by Grand Canyon in Phoenix. The Tigers faced UNLV, South Dakota, Valparaiso once each and Grand Canyon twice, all teams that began their seasons on the second weekend of February. Although the Tigers left Arizona without a win, the team hit .286 and saw seven players hit better than .300. Junior Keeley Walsh led the team with six hits while classmate Kaylee Grant hitting .417 (5-12). Rookie Mackenzie Meyer tripled and had hits in two of her four at-bats.Â
George Washington is three weekends into the season and stands 9-7 but is coming off having been swept in four games at South Carolina's tournament last weekend by Marshall, Liberty and the host Gamecocks. The Colonials are hitting .279 as a team with seven players having split the team's 11 home runs over the 16 games. Marta Fuentes leads the regulars with a .357 average and 20 hits. In the circle, GW has a 3.73 ERA with Sarah Costlow (4-1, 2.42) and Sierra Lange (4-4, 3.04) combining to throw 83 of the team's 103 1/3 innings.Â
Princeton and GW have met twice, with Princeton winning both in D.C., once in 2011 and once in 2013.Â
FDU is 2-6, having played on the second weekend of February in Florida before taking two weeks off from games and competing again last weekend in Baltimore. The Knights are hitting .265 as a team with Jaymee Jackson hitting .364 and Reanna Cervantes at .357 with a team-high 10 hits. FDU's team ERA stands at 4.43 with all three arms including Baylee Ports (1-2, 4.13), Abby England (1-1, 4.42) and Erica Johnson (0-3, 4.74) throwing between 12 and 20 innings.
Princeton is 4-0 all-time against FDU, but all four games were between 1983 and 1985.
After the weekend, Princeton will head to Florida for its spring trip before returning for the second weekend of spring break to open the Ivy League season March 24 against Brown.Â
