James Goble and the Princeton men's lightweight rowing team used a home showdown with defending champion Cornell two years ago as a launching pad to medals at both the 2016 Sprints and IRA Championships.
The Tigers would like nothing more than to see history repeat itself this season.
Reigning IRA champion Cornell will head to Lake Carnegie Saturday morning for a Top-5 showdown against a Princeton squad that made an impressive home debut last weekend. The third-ranked Tigers (5-1, 1-1 Ivy) swept both Dartmouth and Delaware in a home regatta, and they won races at every level in their tune-up for the Platt Cup.
Princeton leads the all-time Platt Cup series 37-17, though Cornell currently holds the Cup following a late comeback on the Cayuga Inlet last weekend. The Big Red have won four of the last five meetings, though Goble was in the 1V in 2016 when Princeton ended an 18-race win streak for the Big Red.
"Cornell as a team has proven time and again that they know how to win," Goble said. "Saturday's racing will be a great opportunity for us to test our early-season speed and a key step on the road to Sprints and IRAs."
Goble is a leader in a 1V that has a unique blend from all classes; the boat lineup has stayed the same since a Murtaugh Cup win over Navy in the opener, and it has included two rowers from each class, as well as a freshman coxswain. As one who remembered what it was like to step into the 1V as a freshman, Goble has been highly impressed with the performances of Marcus Jonas (stroke), David Slear (7), and Sydney Edwards (coxswain).
"It has been awesome seeing Marcus, David and Sydney stepping up to the pressure of varsity racing," he said. "As our stern pair, Marcus and David bring a mélange of British & Texan rhythm to the boat, and Sydney's coxing is world-class."
Fifth-ranked Cornell split its races last weekend, which included a Leonard's Cup win over Penn. Harvard made a big jump up the rankings with a win by more than nine seconds over the Big Red; the Crimson now stand #2 in the poll, one spot behind Columbia.
Saturday's racing will follow the open team's Eisenberg Cup showdown against both Yale and Iowa, and both will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network. The full schedule is below.
