Women's Lightweights Look To Build On Radcliffe Win During Two-Day Knecht Cup Regatta
April 12, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
KNECHT CUP SCHEDULE l NATIONAL POLL
The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team took care of one big test last Saturday in its 2018 home opener. The Tigers will get an even bigger one this weekend, and it will likely set the favorite for the Eastern Sprints later this month.
While top-ranked Stanford will remain on the west coast this weekend, the next six ranked programs will meet on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., this weekend to compete in the annual Knecht Cup regatta. The two-day event begins Saturday at 7:30 am with a pair of women's lightweight eight semifinals, with third-ranked Princeton set to compete in the 7:38 semifinal.
Princeton (1-1) picked up its first win of the season last weekend in dominating fashion, defeating Radcliffe by more than 12 seconds on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers won the top three races of the day, including a V4 win by 11 seconds. Princeton will race a trio of fours this weekend, including the V4A boat that topped the Crimson last weekend. Because the Knecht Cup doesn't race doubles, the undefeated Princeton 2x of Grace Miles and Madeline Travnik will race as singles.
The highlight event of the weekend will come in the lightweight eights, where a tightly-packed set of ranked boats should have a better idea of where they stand. Stanford is currently ranked first with 39 of 40 possible points in the latest USRowing national poll. The next four teams (Princeton, Boston University, Georgetown, and Wisconsin) all received between 31 and 28 points in the latest poll. The Terriers will bring an especially large amount of confidence to Mercer Lake this weekend, as they are coming off a tight, exciting home win over Stanford last weekend.
Boston University, which is bringing a trio of eights to the Knecht Cup, will be racing the A boats for both Wisconsin and Harvard in the opening semifinal, meaning Princeton won't see the top Terrier boat until Sunday morning, when the final is set for 10:30 am. While it won't have any tangible bearing on the next time those boats meet on Mercer Lake — during the first weekend of June for the IRA Championship — the intangibles gained by a statement win on that course could be a serious building block to success.
