Princeton Claims Pair Of Medals At Knecht Cup
April 14, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton women's lightweight rowing team got a taste of what it will take to win its first Eastern Sprints title since 2011 Saturday in a condensed Knecht Cup schedule. The Tigers now have two weeks to find the extra gear it will take to bring the gold home from Lake Quinsigamond.
With a significant weather shift set for Sunday, the Knecht Cup moved its schedule to fill one day, and the Princeton lightweight women left nearby Mercer Lake with a pair of medals Saturday.
The varsity eight, which led its grand final at the 1000-meter mark, finished with bronze medals after taking third in a hotly contested A final Saturday night. The four boats ranked just behind Stanford in the latest national poll put on a show worthy of top-five rankings. Boston University, coming off last weekend's home win over Stanford, rallied for a win in 6:40.7, while Georgetown edged Princeton by about one second for the silver medal.
That left Princeton and Wisconsin battling for the final spot on the medal podium, and the Tigers took that position by less than one second over the Badgers. The Tigers finished the course, site of the 2018 IRA national championships, in 6:43.9. Both Harvard and MIT fell off the pace, one that indicates the April 29 Sprints final could be one for the ages.
The Princeton V4A held off a pair of Georgetown boats to take silver in its grand final. Wisconsin took the race in 7:28.5, while Princeton finished in 7:37.4. That time was more than three seconds faster than Georgetown.
Princeton will honor its Class of 2018 and take another shot at Georgetown next weekend when it hosts the Hoyas for the Class of 2006 Cup on Lake Carnegie.
