Princeton Jumps to No. 11 in CWPA Varsity Poll, Finishes Regular Season at DeNunzio This Weekend
April 12, 2018 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – After a 4-0 weekend, taking down three ranked foes, the Princeton Tigers jumped to No. 11 in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll.
Last Saturday, the Tigers defeated No. 13 Indiana, 10-8, behind Lindsey Kelleher's game-winning goal with 4:47 to go. Three different players had hat tricks as Princeton took down Saint Francis, 15-7. On Sunday, Haley Wan and Eliza Britt combined for half of the Tigers' goals in a 14-12 decision over No. 12 Hartwick. In perhaps one of the most impressive wins in program history, the Tigers went toe-to-toe with No. 9 Michigan, ending the Wolverines' 20-game winning streak on Chelsea Johnson's double-overtime tally (8-7).
Princeton will close the regular season this weekend at DeNunzio Pool with four CWPA matchups. On Saturday, the Tigers take on George Washington (11 a.m.) and Brown (7:30 p.m.). Prior to the contest against Brown, the team will honor its three seniors, Johnson, Wan and Sydney Cheong. On Sunday, Princeton will take on No. 19 Harvard at 10:30 in a game that can be seen on ESPNU. The regular season finale will be against Bucknell at 3:30 p.m.
Head coach Becca Dorst's squad has never lost to George Washington and has beaten the Colonials twice already this season. The Tigers have lost to Brown once since 2004 while only losing one time in program history to Harvard (41-1). Princeton has also only lost once to Bucknell since 2010.
Stanford still sits at the top of the Varsity Poll, followed by USC, Calif., UCLA and Hawaii. Michigan dropped to No. 10 with the loss to Princeton.
Wan reached the 50-goal milestone over the weekend and sits 52 tallies this year. She has 211 career goals, good for fifth all-time. She also has a team-best 48 steals and is second on the Tigers with 33 assists. Lindsey Kelleher has 40 goals and 34 helps to stand second on the squad with 74 points. Her 114 assists are the third highest all-time behind Helen Meigs '10 (206) and Wan's 139. Johnson (37), Amy Castellano (32) and Britt (29) have all registered at least 20 goals. Freshman Marissa Webb has been sparkling as the goalie with a 16-7 record and .545 save percentage.
Here's the CWPA schedule for this weekend at DeNunzio Pool. Only Princeton games will be streamed on the Ivy League Network except for the Harvard game on Sunday.
