Meyer Homers Again as Princeton Sweeps Series at Yale
April 14, 2018 | Softball
Recording their first three-game sweep of the Ivy League season, the Princeton softball team beat Yale 2-1 in 11 innings and 4-2 Saturday to complete the weekend.
The sweep keeps Princeton in contention in the Ivy League race, which stands as follows heading into next weekend:
Â
Allie Reynolds and Yale's Terra Jerpbak dueled for all 11 innings in the opener, combining to throw 320 pitches with Jerpbak accounting for 172 of those. The pitchers also combined to get out of jam after jam, with Reynolds yielding the run on 11 Yale hits and a walk and Princeton getting 12 hits and drawing three walks but pushing across two runs.Â
Yale scored first, getting three straight singles with two out and Sydney Grobman bringing home the run for the 1-0 lead. Princeton responded quickly in the top of the fourth, with rookie Mackenzie Meyer homering for the fifth time this season, all in a 10-game span, to tie it back up.
It stayed at 1-1 for the next six innings, though, as Princeton left seven on base between Meyer's home run and taking the lead in the 11th and Yale left 10 after it scored. Princeton broke the deadlock with three straight one-out singles in the 11th and Gianna Mavica getting the decisive hit.
In game two, three of Princeton's four runs were unearned to Yale pitcher Miranda Papes as the Bulldogs committed six errors. Both runs were unearned as Princeton took a 2-0 lead in the second on a hit batter, two errors, a walk and a wild pitch. The Tiger lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth when Megan Donahey started the inning with a bunt single and Joey Smith brought home a run on a groundout with two Yale errors in between.
Ashley LaGuardia stranded all five Yale runners to reach over the first six innings before the Bulldogs spoiled the shutout in the seventh. A single, hit batter, walk and an error, all with two out, let Yale halve the deficit to pull within 4-2, but LaGuardia left the tying runs on the corners.
Princeton will play its final regular-season non-league game Wednesday at Lehigh in a 4 p.m. single game.
