Princeton Wins 3 of 5 On The Cayuga, But #2 Yale Retains The Carnegie Cup
April 21, 2018 | Heavyweight Rowing
The reigning IRA national champion and second-ranked Yale Bulldogs won their fifth straight Carnegie Cup Saturday morning on the Cayuga Inlet with a 7.8-second victory over seventh-ranked Princeton. The Tigers won three of the five races during the regatta, which included the eighth and ninth wins for the undefeated Princeton 2V.
Yale made program history by winning five straight Carnegie Cups, and it did so in impressive fashion against a pair of Top-12 programs. The Bulldogs took the win in 5:41.2, while Princeton finished second in 5:49.0. The Tiger 1V moved to 7-2 on the season with a victory of more than five seconds over 12th-ranked Cornell.
The Princeton 2V built off its win over Harvard on the Charles River last weekend by topping Yale by four seconds; the Tigers, currently second in the Sprints seeding poll, defeated Yale in a time of 5:57.4, while Yale finished second in 6:01.4.
Both Princeton and Yale held the top two spots in the initial 3V Sprints seeding poll, and it was Yale who will move to #1 after topping Princeton by four seconds in their race. The Princeton 4V was also the top seed in the latest Sprints poll, and it looked extremely strong in its victory over Yale and Cornell; the Tiger time of 6:06.8 topped runner-up Yale by more than 13 seconds. The Princeton 5V also posted a victory of more than 11 seconds, which also followed a win over Harvard.
Princeton will return to Lake Carnegie next weekend to take on Brown in the annual Content Cup regatta, the final races before Eastern Sprints. That regatta, along with the open women racing against both Wisconsin and Syracuse, will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
