Tigers Clinch Ivy Tournament Berth After 15-10 Win Over Cornell
April 21, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
A total team effort in the second half lifted No. 19 Princeton to a 15-10 win over Cornell on Senior Day on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium as the Tigers clinched a spot in the 2018 Ivy League Tournament.
Â
The Tigers did not gain its first lead of the game until the second, down 7-6 at the half. It was a back-and-forth first half with the team's trading goals. Cornell never led by more than two and four of Princeton's six goals came from eight-meter attempts.
Â
Princeton won the first six draw controls of the second half with senior Ellie McNulty collecting three, junior Nonie Andersen two and Kathryn Hallett one. Couple that with the three shots denied by freshman goaltender Sam Fish, and the offense had the time to rattle of five straight goals to take an 11-7 lead at 16:50 with five different goal scorers coming up with tallies. Andersen put an exclamation point on the run when she stripped the Big Red of the ball on the defensive end, cleared herself and buried the unassisted marker.
"Draw control wins made a huge difference for us," head coach Chris Sailer said. "They allowed us to get and keep momentum and get some fast break looks. We also started passing the ball better on offense and finding teammates on cuts, and Sam did a great job in the cage on the other end."
Caroline Allen ended Cornell's drought of 16:27 with a free-position goal at 15:16.
Â
The Tigers were quick to respond 24 seconds later as Elizabeth George found twine on a feed from Colby Chanenchuk.
Â
Allen tried to single-handily get her team back in it with another goal 30 seconds later, to make it a 12-9 game.
Â
Turnovers for both teams kept the nets still for the next seven minutes before Princeton added two more goals in 1:02, one on a free-position from Kyla Sears and Allie Rogers with an unassisted strike.
Â
Sarah Phillips put away a pass from Taylor Reed at 1:02, the final goal for the Big Red but Sears would have the final say with a goal from Haley Giraldi with 10 seconds remaining.
Â
Fish earned the win in goal with 12 saves as Princeton outshot Cornell 37-29. Katie McGahan stopped eight for the Big Red.
Â
Princeton won the draw control battle 18-9 with a 10-3 differential in the second half.
Â
Sears paced the offense with five points on four goals and one assist. McNulty notched three goals and one assist and sophomore Tess D'Orsi had three goals.
