Princeton Wins Back-to-Back Ivy League Championships
April 22, 2018 | Women's Golf
It took a third-day charge and a playoff hole, but the Princeton women's golf team retained its Ivy League Championship, defeating Harvard after 54 holes weren't enough to determine a champion at Metedeconk in Jackson, N.J.
Princeton entered Sunday three strokes back of Brown and tied with Harvard. Both the Tigers and Crimson turned in their best rounds of the tournament over the final 18, each carding a 6-over 288. So, last year's champion and last year's runner up made it a 19-hole Sunday before Princeton prevailed.
The playoff sent Princeton and Harvard to the ninth hole, and the top four Tigers all made at least par, with Tenley Shield and Amber Wang making birdie and Anabelle Chang and Maya Walton making par for Princeton to card -2 on the extra hole while Harvard finished 4-over par.
The title is Princeton's sixth in program history and the second time the Tigers have gone back-to-back, along with 2004 and 2005. The other titles, along with last year, were in 1999 and 2001.
Individually, Chang led the Tigers at +8, second overall and four shots back of winner Michelle Xie of Harvard. Chang was one of three Tigers in the top 10, including ties, along with Walton, tied for fifth at +10, and last year's champion, Wang, tied for 10th at +15.
The Tigers will find out their NCAA regional destination Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel. The regionals will run May 7-9 and will be hosted by Texas, Stanford, Wisconsin and Florida State.
