Looking for an encore of her 2017 NCAA Regional performance that earned her a ticket to the NCAA Championships, Princeton sophomore Maya Walton did what she needed to do Monday to put herself in contention for such a bid.
Walton stands tied for fifth overall in the 96-player field at the NCAA Regional at San Francisco's TPC Harding Park after shooting a 2-under 70 by making four birdies on the front nine and just two holes over par overall, both bogeys.
The top six teams and top three players not on those teams will advance to the NCAA finals in Oklahoma. With 36 holes to play between Tuesday and Wednesday, UCLA (-8), Kent State (-4), Colorado (-4), Louisville (-1), Stanford (-1) and Oregon (-1) are in those six spots. As a team, Princeton stands 16th at +17.
Stanford's Andrea Lee, Colorado's Brittany Fan and UCLA's Mariel Galdiano co-lead the field at -6. UCLA's Patty Tavatanakit stands fourth at -4 with Walton among five players tied for fifth at -2. Three of those five are not among the top six teams, including Walton, Oklahoma State's Kenzie Neisen and North Carolina's Ava Bergner.
Princeton will begin teeing off for Tuesday's second round at 9:55 a.m. local time/12:55 p.m. Eastern Time. Results are available via Golfstat here.Â
