Princeton Set For Top-5 Showdown At HYP, Seeks Return Of Goldthwait & Vogel Cups
April 25, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The last time the Princeton men's lightweights competed on the road, they left Overpeck Park with an achingly close loss to Columbia in the Campbell Cup regatta. The Tigers knew they would face top competition later in the season, and they had a three-week homestand to try to get more prepared for those races.
That plan couldn't have played out any better.
Fifth-ranked Princeton will head to the Housatonic River this Saturday morning to face both #1 Harvard and #4 Yale in the annual Goldthwait & Vogel Cup regatta, the lone H-Y-P event in college rowing. The Tigers will take a six-race win streak to Connecticut, though none of those wins was as big as a record-setting victory over Cornell two weeks ago on Lake Carnegie.
"The crew has done a fantastic job this season growing week over week and session over session," junior Jordi Cabanas said. "We are a much more mature crew at this stage in the season and I think that showed in our bout with Cornell. Being able to sit next to a crew for 1750 meters and not bat an eye, even when Cornell made a big 4 seat push at the 1k, has proven to us that we can race well under pressure and make the decisive move when it's time to go win the race."
That win, followed by last week's home wins over both Penn and Georgetown, should give the Tigers plenty of positive momentum heading into Saturday, though Cabanas knows that past results won't mean anything when the three varsity boats line up for their 11:20 am race.
"It would be a mistake to go into this race looking at past results and making assumptions about future speed," he said. "That's the beauty of our league. Pretty much every week is a fresh start. All we can do is to take every opportunity this week to build speed and be as fast as possible on race day. I have the utmost confidence in our preparation and in my crew mates, and that confidence will allow us to be poised to execute on race day."
Each of the three programs have taken the Goldthwait Cup — award to the V8 winner — once over the last three seasons, including a Harvard home win last season. Princeton's last win in this race came in 2015, and it also came on the Housatonic, a victory of just over one second ahead of Yale.
Harvard enters the weekend unbeaten in 2018, while both Princeton and Yale have lost only to Columbia on the season (Harvard defeated Columbia two weeks ago). The Crimson also hold the series lead with 45 wins, followed by Princeton (27) and Yale (20).
The Vogel Cup will go to the winner of the team competition; Princeton's last Vogel Cup win also came in 2016.
The regatta, which is set to be streamed live on the Ivy League Network (see link above), will begin with a 5V race at 10 am. The full schedule is below.
