PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers get back into Ivy League action as they travel to Providence, R.I. for a three-game series against the Brown Bears. The two conference rivals battle in a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 7) beginning at 11:30 a.m. The series wraps up on Sunday (Apr. 8) at 1 p.m.
What Did You Miss?
- Princeton dropped a mid-week non-conference tilt to Monmouth, 7-1, at Clarke Field yesterday.
- Monmouth scored two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to put the game away.
- Chris Davis' RBI single in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winner as Princeton picked up a series victory over Cornell with a 7-6 win on Sunday afternoon.
- On Saturday, the two teams split a doubleheader as the Big Red won game one, 5-2, while the Tigers earned a 10-4 win in game two.
- In game two, Jake Boone registered three hits and three runs while Asher Lee-Tyson had three hits and two RBI. The 7-8-9 hitters in Princeton's lineup went a combined 7-for-13 with six runs scored. Ryan Smith and Tanner Kliewer struck out 11 Cornell batters. Smith picked up first win of the season while Kliewer earned up his second straight save.
- Boone was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday. He made the most of his nine at-bats during the Tigers' four games, going 4-of-9. After beginning the season 2-for-20 (.100), Boone has eight hits in last 24 at-bats (.333).
- Asher Lee-Tyson had a hit in every game last week, going 6-for-13. He also walked four times, finishing with a .462/.538/.611 slash line. The senior finished with two runs scored in a win over Rutgers. He had four hits in the doubleheader vs. Cornell including three hits in a game two victory.
- The senior shortstop now leads the team in hitting at .317 and on-base percentage at .427. His nine walks are second on the squad. He is currently on a five-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in every game this year except for two.
- Chris Davis has a team-best 13 runs scored, touching home at least once in each of the past 10 games. He is on a modest four-game hitting streak, including three straight multi-hit outings vs. Cornell.
- Jesper Horsted has hits in seven of his last eight games, raising his batting average 117 points from .162 to .279.
- Ryan Smith has allowed two earned runs in three of his four starts in 2018. He has 20 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.
- The Tigers have three players with at least three appearances with an ERA of 2.45 or lower (Jack Anderson, Eric Rojas, Eli Kimbell).
- Kimbell has not allowed an earned run in his last 10 innings of work, giving up just two hits and striking out nine.
- The Tigers had three alums make the Big League last season in Matt Bowman '14, Danny Barnes and Chris Young '02.
- Bowman finished his second year with the St. Louis Cardinals with another sub-4.00 ERA (3.99). He was tied for seventh in all of baseball with 75 appearances, adding three wins, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work.
- Barnes completed his first full season with the Blue Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA in 60 outings of the bullpen. He had 62 strikeouts in 66 innings, earned three victories and finished 13 games for the Blue Jays.
- Seven other alums, Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Japan), David Hale '11 (AAA), Jack Murphy (AAA), Mike Ford '14 (AAA), Alec Keller '14 (AA), Cameron Mingo '16 (A) and Danny Hoy '16 (A), played professional baseball last season.
- Ford was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the MLB Rule 5 Draft this winter.
- The Bears are 6-13 this season and 2-4 in the Ivy League. Brown has victories over Florida A&M and Dallas Baptist.
- Mark Sluys leads the team in hitting among players with at least 60 at-bats (.313).
- Sam Grigo has a team-high eight extra base hits.
- Will Tomlinson is the squad's best starting pitcher with a 3.43 ERA in four starts.
