Men's Lightweights Make Winning Debut On Lake Carnegie, Prepare For Platt Cup Race vs. #1 Cornell
April 07, 2018 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The second-ranked Princeton men's lightweight rowing team took care of business Saturday morning during its 2018 home opener, winning all races against both Dartmouth and Drexel, as well as a Temple 1V. Those wins improved the Tigers to 5-1 on the season, and likely set up a 1 vs. 2 home showdown next Saturday against Cornell for the Platt Cup.
The Princeton 1V, coming off a tight loss last weekend for the Campbell Cup at Overpeck Park, put those lessons to good use Saturday. While Delaware moved fast early to try to get a jump on the hosts, Princeton was able to quickly move past the field and claim a comfortable win by more than 14 seconds.
"We had a really solid race," said sophomore Adam Teece. "We were able to find a good rhythm early in the race which was something we had struggled with in our first two weekends of racing. That gave us a great platform to lay down the power and move away to a comfortable lead in the second thousand. I was particularly happy with our sprint, our coxswain Sydney Edwards really drove us to sprint hard even though we had a good lead coming into the last 500."
The victory highlighted a 4-for-4 showing for the Tigers, who seemed to enjoy the home conditions, even if they weren't always easy.
"It was good to see the guys stay long and aggressive in those conditions," head coach Marty Crotty said. "You probably couldn't tell down at the finish line which is somewhat protected but the wind was really pumping down that course."
The Princeton 2V had a bit of a tighter margin against Delaware, though the Tigers did take that race by more than five seconds. The 3V topped Delaware by more than 16 seconds, while both the 4V and 5V had impressive wins.
Princeton will take on reigning national champion Cornell next Saturday at 10:45 am for the Platt Cup. You can watch that race live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
"It's always great to win races, particularly as this was our first home race of three this season, but I don't think any of us are going to look at the margin and feel comfortable," Teece said. "We know the league gets faster every year and that everybody picks up speed throughout the season. Our seniors will be finished with their theses this week so we'll be looking to them to provide loads of energy going into a big weekend against Cornell next week."
