Princeton Impresses During Inaugural Ivy Invite, Retain Duo Of Cups During 4-0 Ivy Performance
April 07, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
The fourth-ranked Princeton open rowing team served as the host school for the inaugural Ivy League Invitational Saturday on Lake Carnegie, and the Tigers put forth a pair of strong performances to retain two of their most historic trophies. In the morning, Princeton defeated both #13 Harvard and Cornell to win the Class of 1975 Cup, and the Tigers followed that in the afternoon with wins over #19 Dartmouth and Penn to retain the Class of 1984 Plaque.
The Princeton 1V remained perfect for the season and improved to 9-0 overall, 6-0 in the Ivy League (Princeton raced Harvard in the afternoon as well, but the result does not count towards the Ivy League), and set up a huge showdown next Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers will host #7 Yale at 9 am on Lake Carnegie for the Eisenberg Cup, and potentially the top seed at next month's Ivy League Championships. Yale also went undefeated during the Ivy League Invitational.
While the varsity eight was able to get away from both Harvard and Cornell fairly early in the race (see highlights above), but the 2V8 and V4A races were hotly contested battles with Harvard. The 2V (8-1, 5-1 Ivy) topped Harvard by 3.4 seconds, while the V4A (7-2, 5-1 Ivy) beat the Crimson by 5.4 seconds. Both the V4B and 3V8 added wins for Princeton, which had about 90 minutes between sessions to prepare for its Class of 1984 Plaque races.
That showdown already gave Princeton a taste of the postseason, as the 1984 Plaque is a team competition that factors in the same three boats as the NCAA Championships. It had the extra postseason feel of a second race, but the Tigers handled that challenge and fought off a Dartmouth crew that challenged the Tigers in the top two races. The varsity eight beat the Big Green by 7.5 seconds, while the 2V won by 2.6 seconds, the closest result of any of Princeton's 10 races during the day.
You can watch next weekend's Eisenberg Cup regatta, which will also include #11 Iowa, live Saturday morning on the Ivy League Network.
