Open Women Retain Eisenberg Cup, But #11 Iowa Hands Princeton First 1V Loss Of 2018
April 14, 2018 | Women's Rowing - Open
The fifth-ranked Princeton open women retained the Eisenberg Cup and capped a perfect run through the Ivy League regular season schedule Saturday morning, but the Tiger 1V also suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of a strong Iowa boat.
Maybe most eyes were on the two Ivy League powers early Saturday morning during a clear, warm morning on Lake Carnegie, and you can understand why. Both Princeton and sixth-ranked Yale were competing in the 44th installment of the Eisenberg Cup series, and both were looking to stay perfect and bring confidence into next month's Ivy League Championships.
But all eyes found the 11th-ranked Hawkeyes quickly enough, as they were able to grab the early lead and build on it during the second 500. Both Princeton and Yale were able to cut into their respective deficits over the middle stretch of the race, but the order never changed over the final sprint.
"The race had good points and points that we can still keep striving to capitalize on," said junior Claire Collins, a three-year starter in the 1V. "We moved nicely in the middle of the piece, but our ends of the piece could have been stronger. In conditions like we had today, we needed to use the start more to help get our bow ball out on Iowa. It was a feisty race with Yale. It is always a great rivalry for us and it was exciting to walk out on them.
"While the Ivy League is super competitive nationally, we are very lucky to have some great out of league competition this year in our schedule," Collins added. "So racing Iowa was a treat. We are looking to do big things this year on the national stage and racing them was a good test. The boat came off the water with positive thoughts. It was a great learning moment for us. We are learning how to be more internal and how to attack and race our race. We made steps towards these goals, but we agreed there is more to do. The competition across the country is heating up and we are excited to get back at it on Monday and continue to make strides on the lessons we learned today. We are getting ready to go all the way."
There will be learning moments for the rest of the Princeton boats, each of which placed behind Yale in its races. The 2V turned into the closest race of the day between Yale and Iowa, and Princeton was never able to make contact with either boat during the stretch. The V4A did post a convincing win over Iowa, but it couldn't make up the ground needed on Yale.
Princeton will face a new challenge next weekend, as it races away from Lake Carnegie for the first time in 2018. The Tigers will head to Charlottesville to take on ninth-ranked Virginia next Saturday morning, and then will return home the following weekend to face #12 Wisconsin and #18 Syracuse.
