East Regional Declared List
Â
A total of 21 members, 17 individual and one relay, of the Princeton men's track & field team will participate in the 2018 NCAA East Regional it was announced by the NCAA on Thursday, May 17. The East Regional will be held in Tampa, Fla. on the campus of the University of South Florida on May 24-27.
Â
"This is the largest group by far that we have ever qualified for an NCAA Regional," head coach Fred Samara said. "This year has been a historic year because the quality of standards just keep going up across the country."
Â
Samara is pleased that for the first time in program history, Princeton has qualified the 4x100 relay.
Â
"Our time is one of the fastest qualifying times ever. Usually you can get in with a time between the 40.20-40.40 range. And we ran a 39.90. It's remarkable that we're going to go up some of the best sprint teams in the country like LSU, Florida, Alabana, Georgia – they are sprint powerhouses."
Â
The relay which consists of two dual-sport athletes in Charlie Volker and Austin Carbone – who both play football for Princeton as well, take on the first and third legs. Sophomore Joey Daniels is on leg 2 and senior Carrington Akosa is the anchor.Â
Â
So what makes this 4x100 so special?
Â
Last year the Japanese national team spent a week prior to the 2016 Rio Olympics training at Princeton's Weaver Stadium. Their passing style inspired the coaching staff as the Japanese went on to take the silver medal in the 4x100 relay.
Â
"We decided to use the Japanese pass, which is underhand, as opposed to the traditional Jamaican style pass. instead of the Jamaican pass. It took us about a year to get it down and now we are amongst the best passing relays in the country."
Â
In just the second time putting the relay into competition at Texas, Princeton put up the program's fastest time, a 40.05. Two months at IC4As later the Tigers crushed the time with a 39.90. It is the fourth best time ever recorded in the Ivy League history. Like Coach Samara said the team will face some sobering competition, with all 24 relays being separated by just 1.14 second.
Â
The relay is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 26 at 6 p.m.
