Princeton Makes Trip To Monmouth Thursday

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (10-23, 7-11 Ivy) complete the non-conference portion of the 2018 schedule with a trip to West Long Branch, N.J. to take on the Monmouth Hawks (19-20, 9-6 MAAC).
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on the Ivy League Network. There will be no live stream of the contest.
What Did You Miss?
- The Yale Bulldogs earned a three-game sweep over the Princeton Tigers at Clarke Field over the weekend.
- In game one, Ben Gross struck out eight hitters in seven innings, allowing just one earned run. Yale's Griffin Dey began the top of the seventh with a home run to left center, putting the Bulldogs back in front, 2-1. Princeton's last eight hitters were retired as the Bulldogs earned the decision.
- Yale took down Princeton, 6-0 in game two. Jesper Horsted snagged two of Princeton's five hits. James Proctor pitched seven innings, struck out seven hitters and gave up two earned runs in the loss.
- The Bulldogs registered an 8-3 decision over the Tigers in game three on Sunday. Five different Tigers had a hit including Asher Lee-Tyson in the final home game of his Princeton career. Conor Nolan hit a two-run home run while Ryan Smith and Andrew Gnazzo combined for 11 strikeouts in the loss.
- Horsted's nine-game hitting streak came to an end in game three against Yale. He still leads the team in hitting (.315), total bases (47) and on-base percentage (.407). Horsted has seven extra-base hits, 18 runs and 14 RBI.
- Princeton has five hitters with at least a .250 batting average in Horsted, Asher Lee-Tyson, Conor Nolan, Chris Davis and Taylor Beckett.
- Nolan has a team-best .432 slugging percentage, 20 walks and six stolen bases along with nine extra-base hits and 20 RBI.
- Davis has been the Tigers' lead-off hitter, leading the squad with 24 runs. He has six extra-base hits and four stolen bases.
- Beckett is slugging .390 with five doubles and two home runs.
- Joseph Flynn has team-best with four home runs and 25 RBI.
- The Princeton pitching staff is averaging 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
- Gross has allowed three earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts and has struck out at least seven hitters in his last five outings.
- Smith has pitched at least five innings in six of his last seven starts.
- Eli Kimbell has been one of the best relief pitchers in the conference with a 2.00 ERA in 10 appearances. He has 34 strikeouts in 27 innings while opponents are hitting just .194 against him.
- The Tigers had three alums make the Big League in 2017 in Matt Bowman '14, Danny Barnes and Chris Young '02 and three make it in 2018 with Bowman, Barnes and David Hale '11.
- Bowman finished his second year with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 with another sub-4.00 ERA (3.99). He was tied for seventh in all of baseball with 75 appearances, adding three wins, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work.
- Barnes completed his first full season with the Blue Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA in 60 outings of the bullpen. He had 62 strikeouts in 66 innings, earned three victories and finished 13 games for the Blue Jays.
- Seven other alums, Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Japan), David Hale '11 (AAA), Jack Murphy (AAA), Mike Ford '14 (AAA), Alec Keller '14 (AA), Cameron Mingo '16 (A) and Danny Hoy '16 (A), played professional baseball last season.
- This year, Barnes has not allowed an earned run in 13 of his 15 appearances this season.
- The Monmouth Hawks are 19-20 overall and 9-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Hawks have victories vs. Penn State, UMBC, George Washington, Delaware, Marist, Canisius, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Maine, Sacred Heart, Seton Hall, Niagara and Manhattan.
- Monmouth defeated Princeton, 7-1, at Clarke Field in early April. The Hawks scored two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. The Tigers could only muster four hits in the loss.
- Shaine Hughes leads the squad with a .333 average, .474 slugging percentage and .455 on-base percentage along with 37 RBI and 24 walks.
- Kyle Norman has a .311 average and 14 extra-base hits. He has 36 RBI and 32 runs and a .411 on-base percentage.
- Ricky Dennis has been the Hawks' best starter with a 3.66 ERA in 11 starts.
- Monmouth has an outstanding bullpen with six relievers with an ERA of 3.20 or lower.
