Wrestling Announces Top-10 Ranked Incoming Class (And It's Even Better Than That)
May 22, 2018 | Wrestling
Producing Princeton's highest-ranked recruiting class in program history is exciting enough for head coach Chris Ayres. When you factor in that those rankings don't even fully capture how highly touted the Tiger Class of 2022 is … well, the optimism couldn't be any higher for the Orange and Black right now.
Ayres, who has brought in multiple ranked recruiting classes during his incredible 12-year run leading Princeton, officially announced his Class of 2018 Tuesday, days after it earned a Top-10 ranking by FloWrestling (#8), The Open Mat (#8) and InterMat (#10).
Why those rankings — where Princeton is the top-ranked team in the EIWA — don't fully reflect the Class of 2022 is because they don't include Travis Stefanik, who was the 21st-ranked recruit in the nation last year and took a gap year before beginning his Princeton career. Stefanik was counted as part of Princeton's nationally ranked Class of 2021, and his year has included a fifth-place finish at UWW Junior Nationals and a berth in the World Junior Team Trials.
"We couldn't be more excited to get these guys here and bring their energy and talent into our program," Ayres said. "With back-to-back Top 3 finishes at EIWAs and All-Americans in each of the last three years, Princeton Wrestling isn't in the shadows any longer. Our goal is to compete with the best programs in the nation, and to do that, we need to attract the best recruits. This group, while they have a long way to go to reach their potential, certainly is a big step in that direction.
"There is a great deal of work and sacrifice that goes into securing a class like this," Ayres added. "I am incredibly grateful to for the work Joe Dubuque, Sean Gray and Nate Jackson did to bring together such a great class."
You can read more about the Class of 2022 below. Travis Tavoso was also admitted into the Class of 2022, but he plans to take a gap year and join the University as a member of the Class of 2023.
