Junior Adam Kelly will be making a return trip to Oregon and the NCAA Championships. He took seventh in the hammer throw at 68.63 (225-2). Throwing fourth in the final flight, Kelly had the advantage of knowing what he needed to throw. After a foul on his first attempt, he launched his best throw of 68.63 on his second throw to jump into sixth place. On his final throw he hit 68.09 (223-4) to finish in seventh. Kelly has more in the tank as he threw a PR of 71.92 (235-11) earlier this season, and had four meets in which he threw over 70 meters.
Seniors Garrett O'Toole and William Paulson both advanced in the 1500 meters as Day 1 of the 2018 NCAA East Regional got underway today at University of South Florida. O'Toole ran the fifth fastest time of the afternoon clocking a season best 3:45.78 (45.58, 1:01.18, 1:00.76, 56.27). He was in third place after 700 meters and maintained that spot through the next lap. The final lap saw some major jostling as O'Toole clocked 56.27 on the final 400 to take fifth in the first heat. Two heats later, in heat 3, Paulson put up a 3:51.16 to take third. He took the group out with 47.89 and was the leader at 700 meters with a split of 1:05.68, and was still leading at 1100 with a 1:02.24. He clocked a 54.57 on the final lap to take third and advance. The pair will compete in the quarterfinal on Saturday at 1 p.m. O'Toole will be in the first heat, Paulson in the second. The top five from each heat plus the next two fastest time will advance to Eugene, Ore.

Senior Josh Ingalls advanced in the 800 as he posted the 11th fastest time out of the 48 competitors at 1:48.76 (53.20, 55.57). It was an anxious few minutes for Ingalls, who was fourth in heat two and needed to wait for the completion of all six heats to see if he would get one of the three spots that advanced on time. In the end heat 2 was the fasted on the afternoon and Ingalls took that first spot on time. After the first 400 meters, Ingalls was eighth in his heat and picked off four runners on the bell lap. The quarterfinal of the 800 is Friday at 2 p.m., with Ingalls in heat 3 of 3. The top three from each heat plus the next three fastest times will advance to Eugene. Ingalls is the Ivy Heps 800-meter champion, clocking the second fastest time in Ivy League history just three weeks ago at 1:47.76.

This was the first time either had qualified for the Regionals. Both ran PRs earlier this season with Stone posting a 29:36.24 and Willcutts a 29:46.29.
