Monmouth Snags Walk-Off Win over Princeton
May 03, 2018 | Baseball
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth Hawks (20-21) earned an extra inning 2-1 victory over the Princeton Tigers (10-24) on Thursday evening.
Jack Anderson threw a season-high six innings, striking out five hitters and allowing just one earned run. Keith Gabrielson also punched out three Hawks' hitters in the loss.
Chris Davis opened up the game with a single through the right side. He stole second base and moved up a base on a throwing error. Two batters later, he touched home on a groundout by Conor Nolan.
Danny Long led off the Monmouth half of the first frame with a double, but was thrown out at third base by David Harding. That would be the last Hawks' hit until the fifth inning. Consecutive knocks to begin the fifth would eventually lead to a sacrifice fly from Justin Trochiano that tied the game at 1-all. Anderson, whose previous season-best was three innings, got six flyouts, six groundouts and gave up just one extra-base hit.
The Tigers had 10 straight retired before Harding's hit-by-pitch in the ninth stanza. He would later steal second, but was left stranded. In the 10th inning, two walks and a fielders' choice loaded the bases with one out before J.D. Andreesen was hit by a pitch to force in the game-winning run for Monmouth.
Tyler Ksiazek struck out eight in seven frames for the Hawks while Ryan Lillie earned the victory with three shutout relief innings.
Princeton finishes the 2018 season at Dartmouth this weekend (May 5-6). The Tigers and Big Green take part in a doubleheader on Saturday (11:30 a.m.) before the finale on Sunday (12 p.m.).
