Heavyweights Go 4-For-4 In IRA Opening Day, Look Ahead To Thrilling Semifinal Saturday

IRA LINKS: Complete Results l Live Video l Saturday Lane Schedule
The Princeton heavyweight rowing team accomplished its first goal for the IRA Championships on Friday morning, which was simply to avoid two races on Mercer Lake. All four Princeton boats finished in the top two of their respective heats, which sends each directly to Saturday's A/B semifinals — always one of the most exciting days of the collegiate rowing season.
The sixth-seeded varsity eight held its seed in its heat, though both Dartmouth and Wisconsin made early pushes at the Tigers. Third-seeded California grabbed a few seats early and never relinquished the lead, but both Dartmouth and Wisconsin pressed early to stay within a seat or two of Princeton by the 500 mark.
The Tigers saved their press for the second split, and it was more than enough to build a comfortable advantage the rest of the way. Princeton ultimately defeated Ivy rival Dartmouth by five seconds to advance to Saturday's 8:30 am semifinal, where it will face a familiar set of Eastern boats for the right to race for the IRA national championship.
Princeton will race from Lane 4 in the semifinal, and will face Harvard (1), Yale (2), Syracuse (3), Dartmouth (5) and Boston University (6).
Both the 2V and 3V also placed a comfortable second in their respective heats, but both will have the Western powerhouse duo of California and Washington in their semifinals. The Sprint champion 2V races from Lane 3 at 8:39 and will compete against Washington (1), California (2), Brown (4), Syracuse (5), and Cornell (6).
The 3V will compete at 8:57 am Saturday from Lane 4 and will face California (1), Washington (2), Northeastern (3), Wisconsin (5), and Brown (6).
The newly formed V4 made an impressive debut, winning its heat by more than six seconds. That crew will race at 10 am from Lane 2 against Washington (1), Wisconsin (3), California (4), Harvard (5), and Wisconsin (6).
All semifinals will send three boats apiece to the grand finals, while the remaining three will compete in the petite finals.
