Heavies Send Three To Poland For U-23 Worlds
July 20, 2018 | Heavyweight Rowing
Three members of the 2019 Princeton heavyweight rowing team will be in Poland next week to compete in the prestigious U-23 World Championships. Two current Tigers, Dan de Groot and David Bewicke-Copley, will join incoming freshman Jonas Juel in Poznan, Poland, when the event begins July 25.
Both de Groot and Bewicke-Copley were members of the Princeton 1V that returned to both the grand finals at Eastern Sprints and the IRA national championships. The Tigers took fourth at Sprints, though they were within one second of a silver medal finish, and they followed that by flipping their result with Brown during a fifth-place finish at IRAs.
The duo could find themselves in competing boats during the grand finals, which are set for July 29. De Groot will row in the Canadian M8+, while Bewicke-Copley will be in the British M8+. Bewicke-Copley, along with former Princeton teammate Matthew Benstead, helped the British M8+ win bronze at the 2017 U-23 Championships.
Juel earned the right to represent Norway in the M1x at the U-23 Worlds after two straight years of competing in the 1x at the Junior World Championships. Juel won the B final in the 1x at the 2017 Junior Worlds.
That trio will join five open rowers who will also represent Princeton at the U-23 World Championships. Both Claire Collins and Hadley Irwin will race in the USA W8+, while Emily Kallfelz will be the USA representative in the W1x and Hannah Scott will row in the pair for Great Britain. Those four helped Princeton win a third straight Ivy League championship this past spring, and they went on to lead the Tigers back to the NCAA grand final. Incoming freshman Flo Donald will row in the four for Great Britain.
