Hannah Scott Opens U-23 Championship Weekend With Pairs Silver; Several Race For Gold Sunday
July 28, 2018 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open
Four members of the Ivy League champion women's open rowing team led a strong Princeton contingent into the grand finals at the U-23 World Championships, held in Poznan, Poland. While the majority of those finals will be held Sunday, rising sophomore Hannah Scott got the weekend started in impressive fashion Saturday morning, as she and teammate Heidi Lane claimed silver in the W2- grand final.
Scott, the lone freshman in the Ivy League champion V8 this past spring, made a strong push during the second 500 to move the British pair from fourth to second place by the midway point, and the boat fought off a Chilean charge to claim silver in 7:33.68.
Both Claire Collins and Hadley Irwin were also members of the USA W8+, and that boat used a second-place finish in its heat to earn a direct berth into the grand final. The USA finished more than 2.5 seconds ahead of Germany, and it will row from Lane 2 in Sunday's A final, which will begin at 11:55 am local time, 6:55 am ET.
Collins is one of two Princeton rising seniors who has been part of the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Ivy championship crews. The other is Emily Kallfelz, who won the second A/B semifinal Saturday morning to earn her spot in Sunday's W1x grand final. Kallfelz, who earned the USA spot in the single sculls with a win at Senior Trials, topped her British opponent by more than six seconds to reach the final.
Kallfelz will row from Lane 3 in the grand final, which is set for 12:25 pm local time, 7:25 am ET.
Incoming freshman Flo Donald helped the Great Britain W4- top Greece by more than two seconds to earn the final qualifying spot in Sunday's grand final. The fours will race for gold from Lane 1 Sunday at 10:40 am local time, 5:40 am ET.
The heavyweight duo of Daniel de Groot and David Bewicke-Copley both qualified for their respective eights, and both boats took advantage of a strong repechage to qualify for the A finals on Sunday morning. Bewicke-Copley and his Great Britain M8+ won the rep in 6:05.02, while Canada finished in 6:09.01 to place second, more than nine seconds faster than third-place Italy. de Groot dealt with illness over the week and was unable to race so far, though he could be in the boat for the final on Sunday.
The M8+ grand final, which will conclude the U-23 World Championships, is set to begin at 12:40 pm local time, 7:40 am ET.
Incoming heavyweight freshman Jonas Juel reached the A/B semifinal in the M1x, but he finished outside the top three and will race from Lane 1 in the B final Sunday morning at 10:20 local, 5:20 ET.
