Three-Time Ivy Champion Women's Volleyball Team Will Make ESPNU Debut Oct. 26 In Playoff Rematch
August 16, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Prior to 2017, Yale had been something of a House of Horrors for the Princeton women's volleyball team.
In 2017, Princeton went 2-0 there, and it earned a second straight berth in the NCAA Championships.
In 2018, it will be where Princeton makes its national television debut.
The 17-time Ivy League champion — a stretch that includes each of the last three seasons — will head to New Haven Oct. 26 to face at Yale at 6 pm in a match that will be televised live on ESPNU. This will be Princeton's first match ever played on one of the ESPN linear networks, although all of Princeton's Ivy League matches this season will be streamed on ESPN+ as part of the league's new partnership with the network (learn more information here).
It's fitting that these two programs would represent the Ivy League on ESPNU this fall, as they have combined to earn six of the league's last seven automatic bids to the NCAA tournament. Last September, Princeton ended a 10-year drought in New Haven with a 3-1 victory that put the Tigers in first place in the early days of the league race. Yale would counter with a victory at Princeton to grab a two-match lead in the Ivy standings with only five to go, but Princeton battled back to grab a share of the crown and force a one-match playoff in New Haven.
Through 24 points, the host school was in total control.
After the 25th point, well, the plot changed. Princeton rallied from a 17-7 deficit to actually win the opening set 25-23, and the Tigers never looked back in a 3-0 playoff victory. That win sent Princeton back to the NCAA tournament, where it fell in a hard-fought 3-0 match to Iowa State; ironically, the Cyclones will host Kansas State in the second match of the Oct. 26 ESPNU doubleheader.
Princeton, which begins preseason camp this week, will head to the Colgate Classic Aug. 31 for its season-opening match against Northwestern. Among a loaded stretch of pre-Ivy opponents is 2017 NCAA Sweet 16 qualifier Missouri, Ohio State, Long Beach State, and Maryland.
