No. 14 Tigers Shut Out New Hampshire in Season Opener
August 24, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Despite having to replace three All-Ivy defenders after last season, the 14th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team kept right on rolling in 2018's season opener Friday night at New Hampshire, getting a shutout win and goals from senior Mimi Asom and rookie Gabi Juarez.
The 2-0 win came as Princeton outshot UNH 21-2 overall and 11-0 on goal. Asom's goal, with 28 seconds left in the opening half, came after she drew a penalty kick when she was tripped up looking to center the ball in the 18-yard box. The senior scored her 32nd career goal, burying it inside the left post.
Juarez, who was playing for Mexico in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup earlier this month, took a Tomi Kennedy corner kick with five minutes left in the game and headed it under the crossbar for the 2-0 lead.
Â
The game was the third of the new season for America East preseason favorite UNH, which took its first loss of the season after overtime wins over Rhode Island and Holy Cross last weekend.Â
Princeton will head south for its second game Sunday at 4 p.m. at Boston University, which was picked second in the preseason Patriot League poll but has taken losses on the road in each of its first three games, all by one or two goals and most recently 2-1 at another 2018 Princeton opponent, Hofstra, Thursday night. The game will be streamed on the Patriot League Network here.
Postgame Notes
Senior Mimi Asom's goal was her 32nd of her career and gave her 72 career points. She's eighth in points, with Diana Matheson '08 seventh at 78, and sixth in goals, with Jen Hoy '13 fifth at 36.Â
Junior Natalie Grossi picked up her 16th career shutout as she looks to become the third player in Tiger history to hit the 20-shutout mark. Kelly O'Dell '84 holds the career record with 23.Â
Princeton is now 3-0 all-time against New Hampshire, defeating the Wildcats 3-1 last season at Roberts Stadium after a 1987 win that opened the series in Princeton.
Though Caroline Noonan was the only Class of 2022 member to start the game, Gabi Juarez and Emma Davis were subs out of the rookie class.
