Reigning Champion Princeton Picked First In Inaugural Ivy League Volleyball Preseason Poll
August 27, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
The three-time reigning league champion Princeton women's volleyball team was picked atop the 2018 Ivy League preseason media poll, it was announced four days prior to the start of the season. Princeton, which rallied from two matches down with five to play last fall, earned 14 of the 17 first-place votes in the inaugural Ivy volleyball preseason poll to earn the top spot over Yale.
Princeton returns six starters from its 2017 championship team, including reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Maggie O'Connell, as well as All-Ivy standouts Jessie Harris, Nnenna Ibe, Devon Peterkin, and Caroline Sklaver. The quartet of O'Connell, Harris, Ibe and Peterkin were all starters on both the 2016 and 2017 Ivy championship team, while Ibe has a chance to be the first Tiger to start on four Ivy League champion volleyball teams in at least 35 years.
Princeton and Yale combined to earn all 17 first-place votes, and they were the only two schools to finish with at least 100 points in the poll. They split the regular-season series last year — both teams won on the road — and Princeton swept the Bulldogs in New Haven in a one-match playoff to earn a second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton will open its season Friday at the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament in Hamilton, N.Y., with matches against both Northwestern (12 pm) and Stephen F Austin (4 pm). The Tigers will conclude play Saturday at 11 am with a match against the host Colgate Raiders.
