Schachner Stops PK as Princeton Opens Season at SIUE

Junior Jacob Schachner stopped a penalty kick in the 62nd minute and finished the game with five saves as the Princeton men's soccer team fell 1-0 in the season opener at SIUE on Friday, Aug. 31. Schachner guessed correctly on the shot by Keegan McHugh and pushed the ball away on a leap to the right side.

Schachner made two saves in the first while the Cougars' Lachlan McLean had a shot glance off the left post in the 21st.

Junior Cole Morokhovich had the best scoring opportunity in the 12th on a counter attack. Morokhovich made a great play defensively as well when Greg Solawa got a through ball on the right flank and made a run before Morokhovich blocked the shot and sent it the other way.

Joergen Pettersen scored the lone goal in the 48th minute on a free kick after a yellow card was issued just outside the box.

"We just never got it going tonight, and credit SIUE they played well and are further along at this point in the season," head coach Jim Barlow said. "We're still trying to figure out our identity while getting game fit and healthy. A lot of the guys were thrown into a really fast game tonight and it wasn't easy. Hopefully we can build on this experience and be more prepared for Bradley on Sunday. I think we will be a much better team that we looked tonight."

Shots fell 12-5 in favor of the Cougars with Noah Helm collecting the shutout in goal.

The Cougars remain unbeaten on the season at 2-0-1.

Princeton makes the trip to Bradley on Sunday, Sept. 1 for a 1 p.m. (CT), game to wrap up the season-opening weekend.
