Hampton Scores but Tigers Come Up One Short at Bradley, 2-1
September 02, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Junior Danny Hampton scored his first career goal and the first goal of the 2018 season for Princeton, who dominating possession over Bradley but came up just short 2-1 during the Danny Dahlquist Memorial Game at Shea Stadium.
Princeton (0-2) had all the momentum before a lightning delay in the 23rd minute. The Tigers had some good early chances on runs by senior Sean McSherry and frshman Ryan Clare and kept the Braves out of its attacking third, winning balls in the air and dominating 50/50 midfield balls.
Â
From the free kick as play resumed, Bradley (3-0-1) connected on its first shot on goal as Walid Kherat flicked in the free kick on a header.
Â
Princeton answered less than five minutes later as Hampton tallied the first goal of the season with McSherry assisting. As the Tigers continued to pressure the defense, Hampton tried a shot from 30 yards out that beat Nathan Wisbey on the right side to knot things at 1-1 in the 29th.
Â
Alex Ciaramitaro regained the Braves' lead with a goal off a corner kick in the 39th.
"As we're trying to push so many different aspects of our team along, we noticed today that we are making a lot of progress in a some areas and not in other areas," head coach Jim Barlow said. "And the area we aren't improving on is on restarts. We've conceded a goal on Friday on a restart and two goals today on a restart. The rest of what you do during the game can be irrelevant if you're not taking care of your defensive restarts."
Senior Bryan Prudil attempted to match the goal before the half with a try from the left flank but it was gobbled up by Wisbey.
Senior Ben Martin had the first chance in the second half for the Tigers with a header off of a Hampton corner kick. Wisbey grabbed the ball out the air in the 49th.
Junior defender Bobby Hickson had a great defensive effort in the 72nd minute when a cross off a through ball got into the box to Younes Dayekh who was able to turn. Hickson blocked the shot and Princeton countered.
Â
Five minutes later McSherry had a chance to even things up but Wisbey cut off the angle and booted it away.
Â
Princeton had a 15-6 shot differential and took two more corners, 6-4. Wisbey made three saves in goal, while junior Jacob Schachner had zero saves.
"We created a lot of chances today but didn't do well with the last part of our attack, and we need to improve on that. When you're not conceding shots from the run of play but from restarts it's really frustrating. Our guys can take this kind of loss and use it, realizing they need to take advantage of every chance to improve defending restarts."
The Tigers face Delaware on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., and host Monmouth in the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
