Princeton was selected fourth in the 2018 Ivy League Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, that was released on Wednesday, Aug. 29. The Tigers earned 75 points, just five out of third place. Princeton finished in a three-way tie for third place a year ago with a 2-3-2 Ivy League record.
The Tigers went 6-7-4 in 2017 and had five players named All-Ivy League.
Princeton returns four of those five all-Ivy League players including forward Jeremy Colvin, defenders Richard Wolf and Matthew Mangini and goalkeeper Jacob Schachner.
The defense held opponents scoreless in the first half in 16 of 17 games in 2017, including a streak of 13 straight games. As a whole, the defense allowed just 38.2 percent of the opponents shots to get on frame.
Jacob Schachner was second in the league in saves per game (3.81) last year and had the third-best save percentage (.792), while ranking fourth in goals against average (0.92). He posted four shutouts during the season.
Jeremy Colvin led Princeton in scoring in 2017 with 13 points on five goals and three assists. In his three seasons, he has totaled 22 points with seven goals and eight assists.
Princeton played a pre-season scrimmage against Columbia on Saturday with the Tigers winning 1-0 on an early first-half goal by Benjamin Martin. He was assisted by Frankie DeRosa. Twenty-two of Princeton's 29 players saw playing time, including all three goalkeepers.
The Tigers return all but one starter from last year and have its entire defense still in tact with Bobby Hickson, Richard Wolf, Henry Martin, Benjamin Issroff and Michael Osei Wusu. Bryan Prudil will stablize as the center midfield as well as Danny Hampton. Other options include Cole Morokovich, Ben Bograd, and Alex Charles. The last line of defense most likely will go to last year's starting keeper Schachner, while Jack Roberts and Mohamed Abdelhamid will push him to steal the starting slot.
Though the midfield lost captain Matthew Mangini, they have a veteran in Benjamin Martin. He'll be joined most likely by Frankie DeRosa, Kevin O'Toole, Gaby Paniagua, Moulay Hamza Kanzi Belghiti and Kazu Shigenobu. On the wing, Sean McSherry, Will Lentz, Jonah Lytle, and Ryan Clare will look to help the attack.
Up front the Tigers have strikers in Jeremy Colvin, Sean McGowan and Truman Gelnovatch.
Following us on our new Instagram account @TigersMensSoccer The players will be doing an Instagram takeover from Thursday-Sunday as the teams heads to Illinois for games at SIUE and Bradley.
