No. 10 Princeton Dominates No. 14 Wake Forest, 4-0
September 02, 2018 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 10 Princeton Tigers allowed just one shot on goal as they ran by the No. 14 Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 4-0, at Ellen Vagelos Field on Sunday afternoon.
Princeton opened up the contest with two corners in the first 10 minutes of action, but couldn't register a shot on goal. With under nine minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers tried for a deflection on a corner, but MaryKate Neff's attempt went untouched. About two minutes later, Wake Forest's best scoring threat came as a shot hit the top of the post.
The Tigers got on the board with 49 seconds to go as Clara Roth found some clear space on a breakout and slid a pass over to Sophia Tornetta. Tornetta got stopped on the first attempt, but recovered to push one past the goalie. Head coach Carla Tagliente's squad tacked on as the clock expired as Neff picked up a loose ball off a corner and knocked it into the cage. Princeton finished with the first half with a 10-3 shot lead and 8-3 advantage in corners.
Wake Forest earned a corner five minutes into the second half, but Princeton's defense deflected the shot wide. The Tigers couldn't add on to their lead with its first two corners of the frame, but recorded a beautifully executed goal on their third of the half. Clara Roth inserted the ball and streaked towards the cage where Julianna Tornetta found her for a tap-in.
Princeton continued to tack on as Hannah Davey drove down the right side of the field and dropped one over to Jane Donio-Enscoe near the left side of the cage, who took care of the rest. The Tigers wrapped up the non-conference tilt with 12 more shots (17-5) and 10 more corner tries (14-4). Clara Roth had a three-point outing while Hannah Davey contributed her first collegiate point. Claire Donovan made first appearance, making her the fourth Donovan sister (Annabeth, Amy '13 and Kaitlin '10) to play field hockey at Princeton.
The Tigers get right back at it on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) at No. 6 Penn State. Those two squads have split each of the past eight meetings dating back to the 2012 season.
