No. 13 N.C. State Scores Late to Beat No. 20 Princeton
September 02, 2018 | Women's Soccer
A pair of goals 1:22 apart in the game's final seven minutes were the difference as No. 13 North Carolina State, facing No. 20 Princeton for the third time in a year, picked up its first win over the Tigers in that span, 3-1 Sunday night at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton keeper Natalie Grossi was red-carded with more than 17 minutes to go after coming out to make a stop on N.C. State's Paige Griffiths, forcing Princeton to play with 10 the rest of the way and making Grossi leave the game with Noelani Kong-Johnson in her place with the game tied 1-1.
Ten minutes later, on a play that began on an N.C. State corner kick, Ella Bonner corralled a loose ball inside the Tiger 18, turned and fired it in to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead. Just 82 seconds later, after Ricarda Walkling took control of a ball in N.C. State's defensive end and fired it up-field for New Jersey native Tziarra King, the Wolfpack's leading scorer sent it in for her fifth goal of the season and a 3-1 lead with less than five minutes to go.
Princeton scored first, with Abby Givens poking away a ball in N.C. State's 18 and Mimi Asom sending it in for her team-best fifth goal of the year, but the lead lasted only 19 seconds. N.C. State's Kia Rankin found teammate Maxine Blackwood in front of the goal, and Blackwood got around a Princeton defender and found Griffiths going to goal to tie it up in the 24th minute.
N.C. State outshot Princeton 13-8 with a 7-3 advantage in the second half.
Now at 3-1, the Tigers will make the short trip to Rider for a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
Postgame Notes
• The win was N.C. State's first in four tries against Princeton, though the Tigers still lead the series 2-1-1. The teams met in 2014 at Roberts Stadium for a 5-3 Tiger win and didn't meet again until last season, when the Tigers took a 2-0 win in Raleigh during the regular season. The second round of the NCAA tournament brought the Tigers and Wolfpack together in Cary, N.C. last season with the teams tying 1-1 before Princeton advanced 5-4 in penalties.
• Senior Mimi Asom's goal ties her with Jen Hoy '13 at 36 for the fifth-most career goals in Princeton history, and the two points give Asom 80 to break a tie with Diana Matheson '08 for seventh in a career in program history.
