Two First-Half Goals Lift No. 23 Princeton Over Rider
September 06, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Gabi Juarez scored 15 minutes in and Emily Hilliard-Arce made it 2-0 four-plus minutes before halftime, and that's where it stayed as the 23rd-ranked Princeton women's soccer team controlled the stat sheet and got back on the winning side Thursday night at Rider.
Princeton outshot Rider 28-8 overall and 14-4 on goal while drawing 13 of the game's 14 corner kicks. Both goals, though, came not off set pieces but off sequences that began after Rider keeper Carmen Carbonell put the ball back in play. Mimi Asom took control of a ball just ahead of midfield, feeding it forward for Abby Givens to regain control in the left-side corner and cross it over to Juarez for a one-touch inside the left post.
Â
With five minutes before the half, after Samantha McDonough moved the ball back upfield and left it for Sophia Gulati outside the 18, Gulati found Hilliard-Arce on the left side, and once Hilliard-Arce found her angle, she arced it over Carbonell for the 2-0 lead and the first goal of the junior's career.
Â
Princeton will complete the weekend Sunday at 7 p.m. at home against Hofstra. The Pride improved to 4-2 with a 2-1, double-OT win Thursday night at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Postgame Notes
• Princeton now leads the all-time series against Rider 5-1. The game was just the second for Princeton at Rider and the Tigers' first win there, following the only other road game in the series in 1998.
• Princeton used 10 subs in the game and used two goalkeepers. Rookie keeper Grace Barbara made her collegiate debut, halving the shutout with three saves.
• Princeton's 28 shots were a season high and most since shooting 28 times against Monmouth in the first round of the 2017 NCAA tournament. Princeton's 14 shots on goal were the team's most since 14 SOG against Bucknell on Oct. 3, 2017.
• The win was Noelani Kong-Johnson's fourth of her career and first of the season. Her last win also came against Rider, on Sept. 7, 2017. It was her first road win, with the two non-Rider wins coming against Army West Point and Lehigh in 2015.
