Milestones All Over as No. 25 Princeton Tops Yale 3-0 in Ivy Opener
September 22, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Forty goals. Twenty shutouts.Â
Milestones were at both ends of the field Saturday for the 25th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team, but neither was more important than a much more common occurrence for the Tigers: Three points in the Ivy League.
Three goals from senior Mimi Asom were all the scoring in Princeton's 3-0 win at Yale to open Ivy League play, a number that gave her 40 for her career to make her just the fourth player in program history to reach that total. She stands behind only former teammate Tyler Lussi '17 (53), Esmeralda Negron '05 (47) and Linda DeBoer '86 (41) for the most goals in program history.
The six points didn't lift Asom to a milestone career number, but they did move her up on the program's career list there as well. With 88 points, Asom has the fifth-most in program history, behind Lussi (122), Negron (112), DeBoer (94) and Emily Behncke '06 (90).Â
The hat trick was the second of Asom's career, along with one against Cornell in 2016.
At the other end, junior Natalie Grossi completed her 20th career shutout, making her just the third player in program history and the ninth Ivy Leaguer ever to do that. Among Tigers, she's behind only Jordan Rettig '01 (22) and Kelly O'Dell '84 (23) for the most career shutouts.
Asom's first goal came with just 17 seconds to go before the half. Courtney O'Brien sent a centering pass to Tomi Kennedy that Kennedy fired off the crossbar only to see Asom be on the spot to knock in the rebound.Â
Asom staked the Tigers to a 2-0 lead less than nine minutes into the second half when Sophia Gulati sent a corner kick toward goal for Asom to head in, and the hat trick came with 17-plus minutes to go when Asom came from the left side, outmaneuvered two Yale defenders and fired it across the net and into the top-right corner for a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers will continue Ivy play next Saturday when they return home for a 4 p.m. start against Dartmouth.
