No. 5 Princeton Snags 3-1 Win Over No. 24 BU
September 30, 2018 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 5 Princeton Tigers earned another victory over a ranked opponent, defeating the No. 24 Boston University Terriers, 3-1, at Bedford Field.
Â
It took 80 seconds for the Tigers to set the tone as Clara Roth knocked in a shot attempt from Jane Donio-Enscoe. It was Roth's sixth goal of the season, matching her mark from last season.
Â
Boston University earned two consecutive corners in the fifth minute, but could not get a shot on the cage. In the 13th minute, BU's Petra Hall dribbled along the far baseline and tried to sneak the ball by Grace Baylis, but the Princeton goalie stopped it.
Â
Just a minute after that chance for the Terriers, Princeton registered an insurance tally. From outside the circle, Sophia Tornetta riffled the ball towards the goalie. The loose ball came to Taylor Nolan and she tapped it in for her third career tally.
Â
Not long into the second half, the home squad secured its third goal of the contest. Hannah Davey, from far outside the circle, sent the ball towards the cage that was deflected in by Ali McCarthy. It was Davey's seventh assist of the season and the third goal of the year for McCarthy.
Â
The road squad got on the board in the 47th minute. Alisa Connolly, left with plenty space, received a pass from Kiley Gallagher and sent it in for her sixth tally of the season.
Â
Princeton's defense was stout the rest of the contest, allowing just one attempt that never reached the cage over the 26 minutes of game action. Princeton's best scoring threat over the remainder of the game came as Julianna Tornetta corralled the ball and whipped a shot that was high.
Â
The Tigers finished with an 8-6 shot advantage while the Terriers had one more corner (3-2).
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's unit has won three straight games to improve to 8-3 overall. The Tigers go on the road to take on Columbia next Friday (Oct. 5), beginning at 6:30 p.m. The weekend wraps up with a non-conference matchup at No. 2 UConn on Sunday (Oct. 7, 12 p.m.).
