Princeton Heads To Columbia and No. 3 UConn To Open October

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 5 Princeton Tigers head on the road this weekend as they battle the Columbia Lions on Friday (Oct. 5) and the No. 3 UConn Huskies on Sunday (Oct. 7).

Preparing for the NCAA Tournament:
- Princeton had nine of the top 25 teams in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason Coaches' Poll on its schedule.
- Head coach Carla Tagliente's squad opened the season with five straight nationally ranked foes, going 3-2.
- Princeton will also take on No. 3 UConn on Oct. 7 and No. 11 Harvard on Oct. 20.
- The Tigers lead the Ivy League in penalty corners per game (7.5) and defensive saves (four). They are second in assists per game (2.45), goals against average (1.23), goals per game (2.91), points per game (8.27) and scoring margin (1.59).
- Princeton's highest national rank is in winning percentage at No. 10 (.727).
- MaryKate Neff leads the Ivy League in defensive saves (3) and is tied for seventh in the nation.
- Hannah Davey's 0.64 assists per contest is 17th in country and second among Ivy players.
- Clara Roth and Sophia Tornetta are tied for fifth in the conference in points per game (1.36).
- Grace Baylis is second in the Ivy League in goals against average (1.23) and is 12th among all Division-I players.
- The Tigers have two alums on the United States national team in Cat Caro '17 and Kathleen Sharkey '13.
- Sharkey has 141 caps for the national squad, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also helped the national squad to a bronze medal in the Pan American Cup last summer, leading the tournament in scoring with five goals.
- Caro has made 11 appearances for the national team, recording her first cap in January and her first international goal in April.
- Maddie Bacskai, MaryKate Neff and Elise Wong were named to the U.S. U-21 team in July while Sophia Tornetta was picked for the developmental squad.
- Princeton leads the all-time series, 20-1. The Lions' only victory came in New York during the 2014 season.
- The Tigers are 9-1 on the road against the Lions.
- Behind two goals from MaryKate Neff, No. 14 Princeton dropped Columbia, 3-0, at Bedford Field.
- The Tigers completed the game with a 19-4 shot advantage and 9-3 lead in penalty corners. Ryan McCarthy lead the squad with seven shots while Sophia Tornetta added four.
- The Lions are 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League. Columbia has secured victories over Monmouth, Holy Cross, Hofstra, Brown, Bryant and Cornell.
- Jennifer Trieschman leads the Lions with seven goals and 17 points. Danielle Buttinger is second with four goals and nine points.
- The Huskies lead the all-time series against the Tigers, 16-8. UConn is 11-3 at home against Princeton.
- Princeton last won against UConn during the 2012 season, a span of four meetings. The last time the team won in Connecticut was 2002.
- A strong second half that featured a combined five goals gave No. 1 UConn a 5-3 victory over No. 14 Princeton at Bedford Field.
- The Tigers' three goals were the most that UConn have given since Oct. 30, 2016. Princeton finished the game with a 16-8 advantage in shots and 7-3 lead in corners.
- The Huskies are one of the best teams in the country, sitting at 10-1 overall. Their lone loss came to No. 3 Maryland. Some of their signature victories have come against No. 12 Northwestern, No. 15 Stanford, No. 5 Michigan, No. 10 Syracuse and No. 11 Old Dominion.
- Cecile Pieper has 14 goals and six assists, totaling 34 points for UConn. She's fourth in the nation in points (3.09) and fifth in goals per game (1.27).
- Antonia Tiedtke's 12 helpers lead the squad and put her first in the NCAA in assists per game (1.09). Svea Boker and Amanda Collins are fourth among all Division-I players at 0.82.
- UConn leads all of the NCAA in goals (4.73) and assists per game (4.64).
