Donovan's Double-OT Goal Stuns No. 5 Penn State, 2-1
September 04, 2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Annabeth Donovan's goal 2:30 into sudden-death double overtime gave the No. 6 Princeton Tigers a 2-1 victory over the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions at the PSU Field Hockey Facility on Thursday night.
Julianna Tornetta had two defenders converge, allowing her to send a pass to Donovan, who got by her defender and slip the ball past Penn State's goalie Jenny Rizzo. It's the second straight 2-OT contest that Princeton has won, the last one coming in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament against No. 5 Virginia.
Sophia Tornetta wasted very little time getting Princeton on the scoreboard to start the game.
51 seconds to be exact.
MaryKate Neff, just outside the left of the circle, whipped a beautiful pass to Tornetta, who found some empty space and knocked it in the back of the cage. It was her 22nd career goal.
Clara Roth was looking to add on to the Tigers' advantage as she picked up a loose ball and dribbled it to the left side of the circle, but her shot was wide. Princeton had another scoring chance as Emma Street and Sophia Tornetta had a 2v1 break with 16 minutes to go. Street got her defender to move towards her, giving her a chance to pass to Tornetta, but the shot hit the top of the post.
Penn State's best threat of the first half came with 10 minutes to go. After the ball was knocked around, it landed on the stick of Mary Nell Smith, however she registered an attempt that was wide.
Princeton peppered Rizzo with three more shots on goal over the final seven minutes including one from Julianna Tornetta right before half. Tornetta's try tricked away from the goalie, but Cori Conley knocked the ball away from the line.
Moria Putsch tied the contest for Penn State at the 40th minute mark of the contest as she corralled a rebound and slipped it past Grace Baylis.
Following a turnover from the Nittany Lions, Jane Donio-Enscoe came up with the ball and blasted a shot on Rizzo, but the goalie used her blocker to stop it in the 46th minute. Maddie Bacskai would try to cause a deflection in front of the cage several minutes later, but the shot was untouched and went wide. Bacskai had a point-blank bid on Rizzo as the clock ticked near 10 minutes, but was denied.
Princeton had their 12th corner of the night right before the buzzer, however Julianna Tornetta's stab at the cage was off the mark. Neither team had a shot attempt in the first overtime before Donovan's game-winner. It was Donovan's second career goal and Tornetta's 15th helper in 21 career games.
Princeton improves to 2-1 on the season while Penn State drops its first contest of the year (2-1). The two teams have split their last nine meetings against each other. Head coach Carla Tagliente's unit hosts No. 4 Duke at Bedford Field on Sept. 7 (4 p.m.).
