Sarah Fillier & Cara Morey in Hockey Canada Pool to Make National Team
September 08, 2018 | Women's Ice Hockey
Princeton freshman Sarah Fillier is one of 59 players that has been invited to attend Canada's National Women's Team Fall Festival, an annual training camp aimed at helping develop and evaluate the nation's top female hockey players. Second-year head coach Cara Morey has also been selected to attend the Festival's coaching staff.
The Fall Festival will take place Sept. 8-16 at the Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek, B.C. Hockey Canada will split national team prospects into two squads - Team Red and Team White - and train and compete against each other as well as against local teams over their six-day stay in the Peace Region.
Fillier is fresh off of her experience with the 2018-19 National Women's Development Team series that played the US this past August. She was joined on the team by incoming freshman Maggie Connors.
Princeton freshmen class is quite talented, with neutralzone.net, calling it the second-best recruiting class in the nation this season.
Responsible for bringing in that skilled class is Morey, who adds to her experience with Hockey Canada. She coached the U18 team to a silver medal at the U18 World Championships in 2016-17. It came a year after she was the assistant coach with Canada's National Women's Development Team that won gold at the 2015 Nations Cup in Germany. Morey has also been a coach at the National Development Team Camps in 2012 and 2014 and at the 2014 National Women's Team Fall Festival. A former player with the national program, Morey won a gold medal at the 2000 Nations Cup.
All Fall Festival practices are free and open to the public; tickets for the games can be purchased online.
The 2018-19 season will see Canada's National Women's Team face off against Finland, Sweden, and the United States on home ice Nov. 6-10 when Saskatoon hosts the 4 Nations Cup, and culminate with the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship, April 4-14, in Espoo, Finland. Rosters will be announced in the lead-up to those respective events.
Princeton's 2018-19 season begins with a two-game set at Wisconsin on Oct. 19 & 21. The Tigers hosts Kunlan Red, featuring former Tigers Kimberly Newell '16 and Rose Alleva '14, in an exhibition game at Hobey Baker Rink on Sunday, Oct. 7. Admission is free.
