SAN FRANCISCO – Despite a career-high 24 points from sophomore Jaelin Llewellyn, the Princeton University men's basketball team fell to the University of San Francisco Saturday night inside the Chase Center.
Llewellyn's 24 points topped his previous career-best of 22 set against Iona College inside the Barclays Center on December 15, 2018. He also added four rebounds and three assists along with his scoring haul.
Senior Richmond Aririguzoh added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and six rebounds for Princeton while junior Jerome Desrosiers chipped in with seven points and three rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Drew Friberg pulled down a career-high nine rebounds for Princeton.
Freshman Ryan Langborg showed no fear early, knocking down the game's first shot with a three-pointer from the right elbow extended just seven seconds into the contest.
A pair of Don baskets gave them a 10-9 lead with 15:50 on the clock but Friberg found Desrosiers in the left corner for a triple with 15:00 left in the half that gave Princeton a 12-10 lead. Strong interior work by Aririguzoh and freshman Keeshawn Kellman put Princeton ahead 16-12 with 12:16 on the clock but the Dons continued to stay in the contest.
Aririguzoh continued to be a presence inside, finishing a three-point play with his left hand after a drop step in the middle of the key and making the free throw to give the Tigers a 23-18 lead with 9:34 left in the half.
While Desrosiers and Langborg both drained their second three-pointers of the game with 5:29 and 4:35 on the clock, the game continued as a back-and-forth battle and was knotted 32-32 with 3:50 remaining in the half.
Senior Jose Morales stepped in and drew a charge on a driving Don with 2:30 on the clock but USF ended the half with a pair of layups and took a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Aririguzoh picked up where he left off in the second half, bullying his way to a basket with his right hand with 19:16 left to play, but USF would race out to a 51-39 lead with 14:21 on the clock. Llewellyn knifed through the defense and made two-straight driving layups to cut the Dons' lead to seven with 11:53 on the clock. Princeton then cut San Francisco's lead to six with 9:21 on the clock following a pair of free throws by Llewellyn but the Dons were able to expand their advantage to 13 with 7:35 left to play.
Princeton cut into the lead once more as Llewellyn sunk a three-pointer from the left wing with 7:09 remaining, making it a 54-63 game. He would then tie his career-high with another driving layup with 4:29 on the clock then set a new one with a basket with 2:23 left to play.
Despite Llewellyn's flurry of second-half points, the Dons would hold on for the win 82-72.
