Women’s Basketball Moves to 4-0 With Win Over Florida Gulf Coast

PRINCETON, N.J. – Buoyed by an efficient 18-point performance by junior Carlie Littlefield, the Princeton University women's basketball team moved to 4-0 after handing Florida Gulf Coast University its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon inside Jadwin Gymnasium.

Littlefield went 7-of-11 from the field, 1-of-1 from behind the three-point line and 3-of-3 from the free throw line on route to her game-high 18 points. Senior Taylor Baur added 10 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Julia Cunningham finished with nine points, a game-high five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Freshman Ellie Mitchell had a career night on the boards, pulling down a career-best 10 that also tied for the game-high.

The Tigers had an efficient shooting night, going 6-of-12 from three and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. They also out-rebounded the Eagles 47-37 and held them to their lowest point total, field goal percentage and three-point percentage of the season.

While the Eagles scored the game's opening basket, senior Bella Alarie converted an up-and-under layup with 8:59 left in the quarter then sunk a pair of free throws with 7:14 on the clock to spark a 9-0 run that seemingly put Princeton in control of the game. Despite the Tigers' early hot streak, Florida Gulf Coast would take a 17-16 advantage into the second quarter.

Littlefield found her rhythm in the second quarter as she completed a three-point play with 6:09 on the clock that gave Princeton a 21-17 lead. She would then drain a three-pointer with 4:45 remaining and make another driving layup for her tenth point with 3:59 left in the quarter, giving the Tigers a 26-20 advantage. Her jump shot with 1:29 on the clock gave Princeton a 35-25 lead, which it took into halftime.

The third quarter saw Princeton go on an 11-0 run, sparked by a Littlefield layup with 9:29 remaining in the quarter that left the Tigers ahead 46-27 with 6:19 on the clock. Mitchell made a jumper in the paint with 13 seconds left in the quarter and the Tigers would take 58-42 lead into the final quarter.

Sophomore Maggie Connolly gave Princeton a 17-point advantage just 50 seconds in the quarter thanks to a made three-pointer. Baur would score four-straight points thanks to a made layup and a pair of free throws to give Princeton a 65-46 lead with 6:33 on the clock and Princeton would hold on for the 67-53 victory.
