Completing Three-Match Weekend Sweep, Women's Squash Team Defeats Drexel
November 24, 2019 | Women's Squash
Completing a three-match weekend sweep and winning for the fourth time in as many matches on the new season, the Princeton women's squash team defeated Drexel 7-2 Sunday in Jadwin Gym.
The win improves Princeton to 4-0 for the eighth consecutive season.
"The top of Drexel's lineup was particularly strong with two first-year students at number one and two," Princeton coach Gail Ramsay said. "Raneem El Torky at number one played a really impressive match. She lost the first two games but found a way to claw her way back into the match. Once she focused on getting in front of her opponent and in good position, she began to control the play. The fifth game came down to the wire, but she just fell short of taking the match. All considered, a great effort on her part."
Drexel had wins at the top two spots, but the Tigers swept the rest of the way down the ladder, including three matches by 3-0 sweeps.
"Today was a great day to be a Tiger," senior Madison Soukup said. "We all were a bit tired after two big matches against Virginia and Stanford, but everyone was able to step up to the challenge this afternoon and get the job done. I played the number eight position and won my match 3-0. I felt very focused going into the match and I knew I would have to hit great length right from the start. With the results from the weekend, the whole team is feeling great going into Thanksgiving break. We all have a few things to take away from our matches this weekend to help us improve for remainder of the season."
The Tigers will have the Thanksgiving weekend away from competition before hosting St. Lawrence in Jadwin on Dec. 7.
"My match yesterday was very exciting and it was great to have an awesome crowd to support us at our home courts," freshman Lucy Stephenson said. "Drexel came out really hard but we matched it with high intensity and showcased all the hard work we've been doing in practice. I had a great 3-0 win, coming out really fast from the beginning, able to gain leads and capitalize on them. Overall I was really happy with my game yesterday and the team as a whole. It was a great 3-0 weekend and I'm confident we can bring that through the next couple of weeks and the new year."
