No. 13 Dartmouth Ends No. 9 Princeton's 17-Game Winning Streak
November 09, 2019 | Football
The theme of the day was history.
It was Princeton and Dartmouth, facing each other as unbeatens in November for the second straight year, an Ivy League first. And it was at Yankee Stadium, a venue whose historic significance is broadcast with pictures of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and so many others throughout its concourses.
Unfortunately for Princeton, this would also be the day that its long winning streak would fall into the record book, to be remembered as the fourth-longest streak in program history at 17 games.
Â
Jared Gerbino led a bruising offense and the Big Green defense swarmed Princeton all day as Dartmouth won the showdown 27-10 in front of 21,508 in the Bronx. The loss was Princeton's first since it fell to Dartmouth on the final day of the 2017 season.
The 17-game winning streak matched the 17 straight won from 1964 through 1965, trailing only the school record run of 24 straight from 1949-52 and streaks of 19 and 18 in the 1800s.
Â
Princeton won the 2018 matchup of the unbeatens 14-9 at Princeton Stadium.
Â
Princeton was undone by turnovers and penalties, two things that the Tigers had avoided the last two years. It was an interception returned 22 yards for a touchdown by Dartmouth defensive lineman Niko Lalos on Princeton's second possession that set the tone for the game, and Princeton then fumbled inside the Dartmouth 10 the next time it had the ball.
Â
The Tigers had come into the game as the FCS leader in turnover margin, but two interceptions and a fumble led to 17 Big Green first half points. Princeton's Ike Hall recovered a Dartmouth fumble at the Green 39 late in the first half, and the Tigers made it a 17-7 game when Kevin Davison found Graham Adomitis in the end zone with nine seconds to play before intermission.
Â
The teams traded third quarter field goals, and then Gerbino broke the game open with a 21-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Â
Dartmouth used a grind-it-out offense that saw the Big Green run the ball 52 times and throw it just 11. It led to 225 rushing yards and nearly five yards per carry, which then led to a nearly 10 minute advantage in time of possession.
Â
Gerbino carried 16 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Â
Carson Bobo had a career-high with eighth receptions, while Jacob Birmelin caught seven. Davidson completed 26 of 43 for 210 yards, and the touchdown pass made him the fourth Princeton player to reach 20 touchdown passes in a season.
Â
Delan Stallworth led Princeton with nine tackles, and T.J. Floyd and James Johnson made eight each.
Â
Dartmouth is now 5-0 in the Ivy League, ahead of 4-1 Princeton and Yale, who meet next week on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
